The decision of the British Government in 1965 that metrication should be introduced
and encouraged in the United Kingdom did not have any immediate effect on the British
engineering industry. Prompt action to implement the above recommendation was not justi
fied because supplies of essential materials in the form of bar stock, screws, small tools, etc.
made to metric sizes were not available. Some doubts were expressed about the probability
of metric equipment becoming available under a voluntary system for a market that would
initially be very small. It is to the credit of firms faced with the high costs involved in pro
viding a wide range of engineering materials in metric sizes that the supply position is now
better than many had predicted and it will continue to improve.
Any detailed study of the present position and the magnitude and the rate at which
changes are being made throughout the British engineering industry will show that a com
plete change from Imperial to metric sizes is certain. Organisations who fail to plan in an
orderly manner for this inevitable and momentous disturbance to their design and manu
facturing systems coupled with unique opportunities for standardisation and rationalisation
do so at great risk.
A recent survey has shown that in almost every case, firms who decide to change to
metric sizes do so by using metric dimensions on new models. This places an additional
burden and a serious responsibility on designers and detail draughtsmen with long experi
ence of designing in Imperial sizes. The collection and tabulation of the data necessary to
provide assistance of the type that is required and in a convenient form, is a very highly
skilled and very expensive operation. It is also a task which is likely to be repeated many
thousands of times in the appropriate departments of the British engineering industry and
by the design and draughting companies.
The Engineers' Metric Data Manual and Buyers' Guide has been produced to meet this
need and prevent a serious and avoidable waste of skilled engineering effort. During the long
period of transition from Imperial to metric sizes, organisations embarking on the change to
metrication will find that their regular suppliers do not stock the wide range of metric
equipment necessary to satisfy their often urgent demands. To meet this additional need,
the manual includes a buyers' guide that, together with the other data contained therein,
will be updated from time to time.
One of the long-term benefits of changing to metric sizes is the opportunity that it pro
vides for rationalisation and.standardisation. The Engineers' Metric Data Manual can be used
as a firm base on which individual firms can organise and build their own standardisation
programme. It can also act as the standards book in the Design Office, Buying Office,
Stores, Planning Office, and similar places.
The Manual is printed on very durable paper that has been specially coated to minimise
soiling, and is presented in loose-leaf form in an attractive, hard-wearing ring binder.
Arrangements can be made for additional copies of the Manual to be supplied that contain
only the sheets considered to be of value to a particular organisation. Blank sheets are also
available on which stocked size range can be entered to suit the appropriate requirements
of individual firms. This flexibility coupled with the professional advisory service that is
available from the publishers provides the basis for an efficient system of standardisation.
If full advantage is taken of the facilities provided by the Manual and (if required) the
professional services available, a situation that for many firms could result in expensive
chaos can be transformed into an orderly purchase and issue procedure which under the
metric system would be considerably better than their existing system using Imperial
measurement.

AN ABBREVIATED HISTORY
AND INTRODUCTION TO
THE S. I SYSTEM
-S. I . is the International abbreviation for the name:
Le Systeme International d'Unites (International System of Units)
which was introduced in 1875, by International agreement of some
17 countries, following the formation of a treaty known as the:
•METRE CONVENTION «
The Convention has since expanded its total world membership, to
the degree that has now established itself, as the International
Authority on weights & measures, with the C.G.P.M. (General Con-
ference of Weights & Measures) as the senior permanent body,
joined in conference and assisted by C.I.P.M. (Committee of Weights
& Measures) , B . I . P . M (The International Bureau of Weights &
Measures) and I.S.O. for all issues of Standardisation.
By 195*+, the CGPM had approved a system of six units, based on
the MKSA (or Giorgi) system, adding the units of Thermodynamic
Temperature (kelvin or K) & Luminous Intensity (candela or cd),.
to the original six units, -- all to be termed Base Units.
At the next Conference of the C.G.P.M. in I960, the Committee
finally adopted the above named system (S.I.), approving necess
ary extensions of the Base Units, which resulted in the addition
of Derived & Supplementary Units.
It was later accepted that users of S.I. would still have need
to retain other Metric Units, which although not S. I .- were never-
theless, in common use throughout Industry, & in 1969, approval
was given, to the use of associated S.I. Prefixes, required to
form, multiples and sub-multiples of the S.I. Units.
Approval at this time, was also given to a range of units for
both permanent & temporary use with the S.I. System, - whi'lst the
seventh S.I. Base Unit for 'Ammount of Substance 1, - (mole or
'rnol') was introduced.
The following information is supplied as reference only, and
for more detailed information of other equally important bodies,
reference should be made to the B.S.I. Park Street, London.

FOR THE
USE OF THE S.I. SYSTEM
The S.I. System covers a series of units, which are used either
seperately, or combined according to the numerical value or
quantity necessary, to express the related units, - these can
in some cases be replaced by approved Names or Symbols, - with
their multiples & sub-multiples formed, by the use of approved
prefixes, which are indicative of appropriate powers of ten.
The System comprises two groups:
(1) S.I. UN ITS and (2) S.I. PREFIXES
(1) The S.I. UNITS are divided into three classes:
(la) BASE UNITS
(lb) SUPPLEMENTARY UNITS
(lc) I DERIVED UN ITS
The latter class being obtained by basic multiplication or
division of the S.I. BASE UNITS:
