theChapelChoirofStJohn’sCollege,Oxford,andwasaskedbyfellowsingersto
explainwhatthosehorsesandlegsinPsalm147:10ortheloudcymbalsinPsalm
150:5 meant.This monograph is a result of this fascination and presents a re-
visedversionofmydoctoralthesiswhichwascompletedattheUniversityofOx-
ford (Faculty of Theology and Religion and St John’s College) in Hilary Term
