1 appreciation for Sir Herbert Butterfield on the occasion of his

] a seventieth birthday. Professor Butterfield's range of interests has

g been so wide, and the company of his friends and admirers so

Di great, that the editors found themselves in some difficulty as to the
n best means of commemorating the event. They finally decided in

favour of a volume containing a relatively small number of

i essays, each of which would touch upon some kind of history or

o historical theme which Professor Butterfield has illuminated, and

al which has been dear to his heart. This decision necessarily meant

f that many of Sir Herbert's friends and former students could not

y be represented in the volume, although they would certainly wish

i to be associated with the intention behind it. They and others

e will recognize in the diversity of the contributions here printed

n a reflection of the remarkable diversity of interests of Sir Herbert

b that which derives from the desire to do honour to the recipient-
