About the Editors
Sana Loue, JD, PhD, MPH, MSSA, MA, LISW-S, CST-T, AVT, is a professor

in the Department of Bioethics at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School
of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio. She holds secondary appointments in Psychiatry
and Global Health at the School of Medicine and in Social Work at the Mandel
School of Applied Social Sciences at CWRU. Dr. Loue served as the School of
Medicine’s inaugural Vice Dean for Faculty Development and Diversity from 2012
to 2020. Dr. Loue holds degrees in law (JD), epidemiology (PhD), medical anthro-
pology (PhD), social work (MSSA), secondary education (MA), public health
(MPH), and theology (MA). Her past research in both the domestic and interna-
tional contexts has focused on HIV risk and prevention, severe mental illness, fam-
ily violence, and research ethics. Her current research addresses the interplay
between religion, society, and bioethics; the integration of cultural humility into
clinical care and research settings; and past and current formulations of eugenics.
She has authored or edited more than 30 books and more than 100 peer-reviewed
journal articles. Dr. Loue served on the Board of the International Association of
Veterinary Social Work and was the organization’s inaugural Director of Education.
Pamela Linden, MSW, PhD, earned her MSW and PhD at Stony Brook University,

New York. Dr. Linden holds a certificate in Veterinary Social Work from the University
of Tennessee at Knoxville, where she is an instructor in the Veterinary Social Work and
Veterinary Human Support Certificate programs. She is the founding President of the
International Association of Veterinary Social Work. She administered programs for
individuals with serious mental illness, conducted research on problem-solving courts
for both juvenile delinquents and veteran’s and, as a research scientist at the New York
State Psychiatric Institute, studied mandated outpatient psychiatric treatment. Dr.
Linden is the Director of Veterinary Social Work for the AlignCare Healthcare pro-
gram, a part of the Program for Pet Health Equity at the University of Tennessee.
Dr. Linden also administers a nationwide research project that explores experiences of
veterinary medical students with diverse social identities and to improve mental health
and well-being among veterinary students in the USA. Dr. Linden lives in Long Island,
New York, with her husband, Steve, and dogs Dove and Lily.

Contributors
John Allgire, BA, is a detective with the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office, in

Bellingham, Washington, where he has worked since 2001. Prior to being promoted
to detective, he worked in uniform patrol and in Crime Scene Investigation (CSI). In
the detectives’ division, he works in the Sex Kidnap Offender Registration (SKOR)
program and in major crimes. Detective Allgire is a polygraph examiner and also
had been trained in computer and mobile forensics. He received his BA in
Psychology from Western Washington University.
Sandra Brackenridge, LCSW, BCD, has been practicing Clinical Social Work

since 1983 in various settings and in three states: Louisiana, Idaho, and Texas. She
maintains a small private practice, and she supervises social workers for their clini-
cal licensure. As Coordinator of Counseling Services at LSU School of Veterinary
Medicine, 1990–1994, she developed a social work internship, a pet loss counseling
program, an animal-assisted therapy program, and a counseling service for veteri-
nary students. This was one of the first counseling programs in a school of veteri-
nary medicine and the first program to offer all components. She left LSU to teach
Social Work at Idaho State University from 1994 to 2008, and she continued as
Associate Professor of Social Work at Texas Woman’s University. She has pub-
lished numerous articles, chapters, and two books, one about pet loss and the other
about stress management for the veterinary practice team. She served as Pet Loss
Consultant for the Idaho and for the Texas Veterinary Medical Foundations. She
created and supervised the veterinary social work program and internship at the
Center for Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Care from 2013 to 2020. Sandra
provides consultation to other practices that wish to develop a veterinary social
work program. She presents locally and nationally about issues in the veterinary
profession, and she teaches for the University of Tennessee’s certificate program in
veterinary social work. In October 2018 Sandra received the Lifetime Achievement
Award from the Texas state chapter of the National Association of Social Workers.

Athena Diesch-Chham, MSW, LICSW, earned her Master of Social Work degree

from the University of Minnesota in 2011 and is currently licensed at the Clinical
level in the state of Minnesota. As an Intern in the University’s Veterinary Social
Services program, Athena learned from the founder of the program Jeannine Moga,
discovering her calling and passion for veterinary social work. Athena continues to
attend to the “heart work” of veterinary medicine that was started at the Veterinary
Medical Center many years ago.Athena has a wide range of professional interests,
and is passionate about working with the veterinary community in learning how to
manage stress, burnout, and moral injury and moral distress, as well as educating on
the importance of sustainable practice and meaningful self-care. She delivers train-
ing on the topics of human- animal relationships to veterinary professionals, animal
welfare organizations, and social service providers throughout Minnesota. Outside
of her professional role, Athena spends time with her supportive husband, two
young boys, and two pugs. Athena also enjoys traveling back to her parent’s farm in
southern Minnesota where her love of animals and the human experience began
many years ago.
Joshua B. Friedman, MD, PhD, is a pediatrician at MetroHealth Medical Center

and the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, specializing in child abuse pediatrics.
After completing university, he lived on the Masai Mara, Kenya, and researched
hyena behavior. He completed his MD and PhD at Case Western Reserve University
School of Medicine. Dr. Friedman completed his training in pediatrics at Case
Western/MetroHealth. Since completing his training, he has worked at the Indian
Health Service (in Montana) and worked in New Zealand. Dr. Friedman has
researched topics including shaken baby syndrome, child abuse, and pediatric staff
stress and has published various articles including about the economic and social
benefits of shaken baby prevention programs and child murder by parents. He has
presented nationally and internationally at conferences regarding child abuse.
Susan Hatters Friedman, MD, is a forensic and perinatal psychiatrist. She has

practiced in forensic hospitals, general hospitals, court clinics, community mental
health centers, and correctional facilities. Dr. Susan Hatters Friedman has served as
Vice President of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law (AAPL) and as
Chair of the Law and Psychiatry committee at the Group for Advancement of
Psychiatry (GAP). She has received the AAPL Award for the Best Teacher in a
Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship, the Red AAPL Award for outstanding service to
organized forensic psychiatry, the Manfred Guttmacher Award for editing the book
Family Murder: Pathologies of Love and Hate, and the Association of Women
Psychiatrists’ Marian Butterfield Early Career Psychiatrist Award for her contribu-
tions to women’s mental health. She has published more than 100 articles (including
in World Psychiatry and the American Journal of Psychiatry) as well as book chap-
ters. Her research has primarily focused on the interface of maternal mental health
and forensic psychiatry, including notably child murder by mothers. Dr. Susan
Hatters Friedman currently serves as the inaugural Phillip J. Resnick Professor of
Forensic Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University, where she also has

appointments in the departments of Pediatrics, Reproductive Biology (Obstetrics/
Gynecology), and Law. Dr. Susan Hatters Friedman also serves as honorary faculty
at the University of Auckland in New Zealand.
Maya Gupta, PhD, MS, earned her MS and PhD in Clinical Psychology from the

University of Georgia. Her primary area of expertise is animal cruelty, including its
connections to domestic violence and other forms of violence. More broadly, she is
also interested in the application of psychology and human service approaches to
promoting animal welfare and the human-animal bond.Dr. Gupta is currently Senior
Director of Research for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals, conducting applied research on veterinary forensics, animal behavior, law
enforcement response to animal cruelty, community engagement, and policy issues.
She previously served as Executive Director of both the Georgia-based Ahimsa
House (a statewide animal safehouse program for victims of domestic violence) and
the Animals & Society Institute. She is also an instructor for the University of
Florida Veterinary Forensic Sciences Program and the Master’s Program in
Anthrozoology at Canisius College, and a guest lecturer/supervisor for the Veterinary
Social Work Program at the University of Tennessee. She holds governance or advi-
sory roles with the National Link Coalition, the Association of Prosecuting
Attorneys’ Animal Cruelty Advisory Council, the Section on Human-Animal
Interaction in the American Psychological Association, Mojave Animal Protection,
Pets for Vets, Ahimsa House, Paws Between Homes, and the Banfield Foundation’s
Safer Together Initiative for people and pets in domestic violence. She previously
served on the Board of Directors of the Georgia Coalition Against Domestic
Violence and was co-chair of the Cobb County Domestic Violence Task Force. Dr.
Gupta has been a recipient of the Unity Award from the Association of Prosecuting
Attorneys, the Angel Award from the ASPCA, and the Family Violence Task Force
Member of the Year Award from the Georgia Commission on Family Violence. She
lives north of Atlanta, Georgia, with six cats, two and a half horses, and an assort-
ment of rescued/adopted pigeons and chickens.
Lisa Hacker is a licensed Advanced Practice Social Worker (APSW) in the state

of Wisconsin. She earned her Master’s degree in Social Work at the University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2009. Lisa’s postgraduate experience has been in pediat-
ric, medical social work, as well as veterinary social work since 2018. She is the
2014 recipient of the Milwaukee BizTimes “Health Care Hero” Award for her work
with the Make-a-Wish Foundation. Currently, Lisa is the Social Work Program
Manager for a specialty and emergency veterinary hospital in the Milwaukee,
Wisconsin area, which was featured in the June 2020 edition of the Journal of the
American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA). She also established and man-
ages a training program for MSW students for three area universities. Additionally,
Lisa is working on her Grief Support Specialist Certification at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison. At home, Lisa’s pack includes her spouse, a 12-year-old black
labrador retriever, a 4-year-old golden retriever, and a 7-month-old chocolate
labrador.
