FOREWORD
This is a thoroughly good book that I have enjoyed, immensely. Had I been a
candidate for the MRCPsych Part II, I am sure that I would have come to rely on
it during my preparation, seeing it as a guide and mentor, pointing me to other
resources when necessary, and helping me to see both the wood and the trees.
Together with its Part I companion, The Complete MRCPsych Part II will surely
become a routine workbook for those intending to become Members of the Royal
College of Psychiatrists. Well-thumbed copies will become treasured possessions,
too familiar to give away once the examination is passed, but top of the list of
recommendations for the next ranks of trainees. Books like this become friends.
This is, indeed, a comprehensive guide. The College examination has undergone
considerable development and refinement over recent years, teaching as well as
testing those who aspire to become modern psychiatrists. TheComplete MRCPsych
Part II begins by offering a comprehensive guide to the curriculum and the
examination, showing candidates why these hurdles are before them. There is also
a useful, general study guide. The following sections concentrate in turn on the
new ISQ and EMQ formats, the Critical Reviews, the all too often neglected Essay
paper, and the clinically orientated IPA and PMP sections. All formats are carefully
explained such that no candidate need feel in the dark as to exactly what is
required of them on the day.
An experienced, committed and sought-after clinical teacher, Dr Ashok Patel has
brought together contributions from those who either match his expertise or who
have the benefit of recent trials with the examination, a vital hybrid. The breadth
and depth of the material exactly matches what is required. The format, with
practice papers and model answers for each of the components, has a refreshing
frankness: there are only three things necessary to perform well in anything, not
just the MRCPsych examination: practice, practice and more practice. The
Complete MRCPsych Part IIwill structure that practice, making sure that the basics
become second nature (even statistics!) and that the details are familiar enough to
allow candidates to sparkle.
As Dr Patel points out, this book is not just for trainees. Anyone with
responsibilities for basic psychiatric training or who is involved with helping
young psychiatrists through our College examination will find the book of use. I
shall certainly keep a copy to hand, and recommend it to colleagues at any stage
of their careers; all will take much from its pages.
