The genius behind it was acknowledged by the Romans 2000
years ago; it has been popular in Europe for decades; now fi nally it
looks as if the nation is waking up to the benefi ts of Underfl oor
Heating (UFH).
Intended as a more effi cient alternative to radiators, it is perhaps
the realisation by homeowners and developers of the value it adds
to properties that is driving the increase in interest. Not only does
UFH enhance the environmental and sustainable credentials of a
property, it also offers a fashionable, cost effective heating option.

running costs and the resultant savings on fuel bills are a major

radiators, are now demanding much more from their central heating
systems and have become more style conscious than ever.
“Traditionally radiators were positioned beneath windows to
counteract down-draught from the glass, causing radiators to lose
much of their energy through windows. The lower water
temperatures required by UFH systems, around 40-60ºC,

compares favourably with traditional radiators which need water at
60-80ºC. This lower temperature can even be generated by solar
panels or heat pumps if desired and allows a condensing boiler to
operate more effi ciently, saving energy and cutting fuel bills – by as
much as 15% according to British Gas*.
“By not having wall mounted heaters there is no restriction on
where homeowners place their furniture, freeing up to 15% more
space. When running at full output traditional radiators can contain
water at 70oC and will pose the risk of skin burns from contact or
collision. A well designed UFH system will not generate a surface
temperature in excess of 29oC which is much safer for young
children and the elderly.
“Comfort is another major factor; radiators distribute their heat by
convection causing warm air to rise, resulting in a higher
temperature at ceiling level and the all too common problem of
warm head, cold feet. UFH works by radiant heating, distributing
heat evenly through the room with no fl oor draughts, providing
homeowners with low maintenance, low running costs and most
importantly a cool head and warm feet.”
