В 1926 году с целью повышения служебно-эксплуатационных качеств и надежности пистолета Colt M1911 была проведена небольшая модернизация: уменьшена длина спускового крючка, а на его передней поверхности появилась насечка изменена форма спицы курка в основании рукоятки, перед спусковым крючком, появились фаски для лучшего к нему доступа увеличен задний выступ рычага автоматического предохранителя задняя поверхность рукоятки (пенал боевой пружины) получила изогнутую форму мушка и прорезь целика выполнены более широкими упрочнен боек. С 1940-го года ореховые щечки рукоятки были заменены на пластиковые. Модернизированный вариант получил наименование Colt M1911A1.
