PREFACE.
The Chants in this Collection have been arranged with the following main
principles inview:
(i) That single ordouble Chants should be used according to the character
and construction ofeach Psalm.
See Psalmsxv. (single); xxiv. (double).
(2) Thatthe construction ofeach Psalm should as faras possible govern the
antiphonal arrangement; e.g., if the parallel or antithesis occurs
between the two halves ofoneverse, each half should be assigned to
Cantoris and Decanirespectively.

(3) That the variations of subject or sentiment in each Psalm should be
marked bya change ofChant.
See Psalms xviii. Ixxviii.
Should there be any difficulty in following the antiphonal marks (Dec. and Can.)
as theystand, they can be simplified underthe direction ofthe Choirmasterwithout
injurytothe generalarrangement ofthe Chants.
1. The Words, from the commencement ofeachverse and half-verse up to the
accented syllable, are called the Recitation.
2. On reaching the accented syllable, and beginning withit, the music of the
chant commences, in strict time (a tempo), the upright strokes corresponding to the
bars. The Recitation must therefore be considered as outside the chant, and may
be of anylength. The note on which the Recitation is made is called the Reciting
note.
3. Ifthereisno syllable afterthatwhic—h is accented,the accentedsyllablemust
be heldforone whole bar ormeasure,* e.g.

If other syllables follow the one accented, the first measure or initial bar of the
chantwill haveto be divided intoparts of a semibreve.
4. The following general rules will help to explain this, the accented syllable
being called the accent. If one syllable—follows the accent, the first bar is divided
into adotted minim and a crotchet, e.g.

7. In the rare cases in which four syllables followthe accen—t, the bar will be
without difficulty divided into the equivalent offourcrotchets, e.g.

9. An asterisk (*) is a direction to take breath. Other stops(, ;) must be
attended to asin goodreading.
10. Itis of the utmost importance that no break or pause should occur between
the Recitation and Accent. The words should be deliberately recited; but the
reciting note must not be held any longer than is absolutely necessary for this.
Hence in—some verses the reciting note will be only equal to a very short musical
note, e.g.

II. When a verse or half-verse commences with an accent, it is e—vident that
there is no recitation;ithe^rhythmical music therefore begins at once, e.g.

As the accent holds the position ofthe first beat ofthe firstbar, itis unnecessaryto
singit louder than anyofthewords recited: its position, musically,will giveit quite
enough emphasis.
