This book is also for anyone who has died, been imprisoned, or persecuted
because of a sacred plant. I wrote much of it on my laptop, sitting on a sofa that I
bought on Craigslist from a mom whose son was tasered to death near his illegal
cannabis growing outside of Boulder, Colorado, in 2007—just as medical
marijuana was blossoming into a legitimate business. There’s no justice in a
town, in a world, when I can sink into that sofa and write about a plant—a
vegetable—that cost Ryan Wilson his life.
