Should you want to examine thoroughly the Buddhist doctrines in
order to determine which to accept and which to reject, then you
would certainly have already converted to Buddhism even before
you’ve been able to complete your investigations! . . . Although
most Confucians sooner or later stray into Buddhism, it is not their
intention to do so— and do so, of course, by dint of circumstance. This
is because even though they grow mentally and physically exhausted
and wish to cease, they nevertheless feel uncomfortable about doing
so and are unable to stop. And so, seeing that the Buddhists have a
reasoned set of teachings, circumstances conspire to compel them to
follow those teachings.
釋氏之說，若欲窮其說而去取之，則其說未能窮，固已化而為佛
矣。. . . 儒者其卒多入異教，其志非願也，其勢自然如此。蓋智
窮力屈，欲休來，又知得未安穩，休不得，故見人有一道理，其
