What People Are Saying
Q
Covering over 100 childhood symptoms as well as the basics of first aid and
safety, The Big Book of Symptoms addresses the most common ailments
found in infants, children, and adolescents. This resource helps parents
and other caregivers make sense of their child’s physical complaints —
from abdominal pain to headaches to ear infections and more—as well
as behavioral and emotional issues such as anxiety, attention problems,
and temper tantrums. Look no further for expert information on your
child’s symptoms!

Pediatrician; mom; coauthor of Heading Home With Your Newborn:
From Birth to Reality and Food Fights: Winning the Nutritional Challenges
of Parenthood Armed With Insight, Humor, and a Bottle of Ketchup; and
medical editor of HealthyChildren.org
Q
As a mom, I’ve often wished I was a doctor so I would know exactly the right
thing to do when my kids are hurt or sick. The Big Book of Symptoms saves us
all the cost of medical school. It’s written with real parents and their concerns
in mind. It’s like having your trusted pediatrician on speed dial 24/7.
— Tamara L. O’Shaughnessy
Editor, Chicago Parent
Q
Sometimes as a pediatrician I just wish I could download everything I know
about children’s health to a parent’s brain. I still can’t do that, which is probably
good for my practice. But I can recommend that parents buy The Big Book of
Symptoms. This volume should save parents an awful lot of late night phone
calls while ensuring that they don’t skip that one run to the emergency
department if the need arises. The Big Book of Symptoms even includes
extensive instructions on how to save a child’s life. Hopefully, you’ll never
need to use that part, but you’re still likely to call this book a lifesaver over
and over again.

Foreword
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) welcomes you to its newest
parenting resource, The Big Book of Symptoms: A–Z Guide to Your
Child’s Health.
Designed in an easy-to-read A to Z format, this guide describes more than
100 childhood symptoms common among babies, children, and adolescents.
This book helps parents distinguish minor everyday problems from more
serious conditions and suggests a reasonable course of action. Also included
is an illustrated first aid manual, a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
chart, and age-specific safety and injury prevention tips.
Under the direction of our medical editors, the material in this book
was developed with the assistance of numerous reviewers and contributors.
Because medical information is constantly changing, every effort has been
made to ensure that this book contains the most up-to-date findings. Readers
may want to visit the official AAP Web site for parents, HealthyChildren.org,
to keep current on these findings and many other subjects.
It is the hope of the AAP that this book will become an invaluable resource
and reference guide to parents. We are confident that parents will find the
book extremely valuable. We encourage its use along with the advice and
counsel of our readers’ pediatricians, who will provide individual guidance
and assistance related to the health of children.
The AAP is an organization of 62,000 primary care pediatricians, pediatric
medical subspecialists, and pediatric surgical specialists dedicated to the
physical, mental, and social health and well-being of all infants, children,
adolescents, and young adults. The Big Book of Symptoms: A–Z Guide to Your
Child’s Health is a part of ongoing AAP educational efforts to provide parents
and other caregivers with high quality information on a broad spectrum of
children’s health issues.
