PREFACE
This volume marks James Atkinson's eightieth birthday and comes from
the wide circle of his friends as a token of their esteem for him. Its
theme represents the main emphases in his work as a preacher and
teacher of the Bible, as a scholar of the reformation, and as a minister of
the church of Christ. In his memqir, Anthony Thistelton offers both a
sketch of his life and an appreciation of his work which show how well
the title reflects the person we desire to honour.
We write as those who work in one or more of these fields and in that
way we represent his interests, if not always his position. We write as
friends and, in several cases, as past or present colleagues. By a happy
providence we have an essay on Luther by Robert Stupperich, now in
his ninetieth year, who was one of James Atkinson examiners in the
University of Miinster. (His essay has been translated by friends and
former colleagues in Sheffield, Hamish and Sheena Ritchie.) That is
paralleled by an essay (and subject index) from Carl Trueman, for whom
James Atkinson was an examiner in Aberdeen almost forty years later.
Rarely can a Festschrift have included contributors separated in age by
more than sixty years, and associated with the person honoured in this
distinctive way.
The relationship between the Bible, the reformation and the church in
James Atkinson's life and work is reflected in this book. Biblical scholars
link the Bible to the reformation and the church, and reformation
scholars link the reformation to the Bible and to the church, both in the
past and in the present. We hope that they will stimulate one whom we
honour for himself and for his work and ministry, and also make a
contribution worthy of him in these three areas.
