As ageneral though not absolute rule,this Handbook follows the guidelines in The
Chicago Manual of Style,16th ed. (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2010; here-
after CMS) and The SBL Handbook of Style: For Biblical Studies and Related Disci-
plines, 2nd ed. (Atlanta,GA: SBL Press, 2014; hereafter SBLHS),which itself follows
CMS on many points.
Generally,when neither CMS nor SBLHS offersguidance on points of style,this
HandbookadherestotherulesappliedintheEncyclopediaoftheBibleandItsRecep-
tion (Berlin: De Gruyter, 2009–): forexample, referringto“Western Asia” insteadof
“the Middle East” (consistent with the United Nations designations of geographical
sub-regions);notcapitalizingthe“p”whenspeakingofanyoftheHebrewProphets,
Muḥammad,orJosephSmith,Jr.as“theprophet”;andtypicallyreferringtoJesusof
NazarethasJesusfromhisbirthtohisdeath,andasChristwhenreferringtohimasa
