Collective efforts such the one undertaken for the present volume may lay
reasonable claim to have achieved comprehensiveness and completeness.
More often than not, however, bringing them to completion entails a slow pace
punctuated by delays. This two-volume Companion was first launched as a project
as far back as the year 2003. Now that the goal is half fulfilled, I realise that delays
were caused not so much by the dense calendar and workload with which modern
academic life is haunted as by the subject itself. Which is the apposite selection of
texts to make when the hagiographical corpus is so rich and vast? Which ordering
of the material to opt for when chronological sequence is shaky? Which is the
chronological, geographical and thematic spectrum that the term ‘Byzantine
hagiography’ encompasses?
While coping with such questions, collecting chapters and writing my own,
I benefitted from the support of friends and colleagues, some of them being
contributors to this and the next volume. I cannot thank them all by name
here, nor could that list hope to be comprehensive. Some must be mentioned.
Anthony Kaldellis (Ohio State University) generously provided constant advice
on almost every aspect of this Companion and made valuable comments on many
of the chapters. I thank Dr Evangelini Markou (Institute for Greek and Roman
Antiquity, K.E.R.A.), Dr George Papaioannou (Ionian University) and Mr Christos
Rodosthenous (Open University of Cyprus) for their admirable willingness to
take up the task of electronically drawing the maps included in the volume. At
times I greatly profited from the critical remarks and valuable suggestions of Dr
