TARGETS
Sometimes it’s windy; sometimes it’s not. The pic-
ture on the left was taken in September this year
on one of those ‘not very windy’ days; but it was
warm enough that a huge willy-willy (almost a
tornado!) formed and crossed the field in the mid-
dle of an end. It grabbed the target you can see in
the middle and moved it about 15 metres before
proceeding to the shooting line and knocking off
glasses and hats of the watching archers.
Imagine if it had been a gusty day like we had
in the first week of October? That target could
have been completely knocked over onto its face—
destroying any arrows which may have been
embedded in it.
The lesson? Stake your targets! When you take
out your target, also take a peg and a mallet.
Whack the peg through a hole in the part of the
stand that touches the ground at the back. Not all
the way in, just enough so that the wind, or mini-
tornados, can’t take it away.
What’s wrong with this picture?
BOWS
ALWAYS string your bow using a stringer. If you forget yours, then there is a ‘bow-stringing
post’ down by the field. The leg-through method is only for the coach to string the low-
poundage bows; everyone else: use a stringer!
Recently at Samford Valley Target Archers an archer found carbon fibres embedded in his
hand after touching slightly damaged limbs (the outer layer had flaked off revealing the
underlying fibres). So inspect your bows regularly.

BRUCE AND JEREMY
This father and son team first tried
archery while on holiday at Strad-
broke Island. They then jumped into
the beginner’s course at CA in March
and have been regulars ever since.
They both got their bows (SF riser
and limbs) quite soon after the course
and are gaining confidence and abil-
ity quickly. Bruce hopes that one day
his youngest son will join them.

Centenary Archers in History

Centenary Archers Club was founded in 1984, but
has moved around from one place to another. It was
once in Darra, and back then Sandy was not yet a
longbow champion, she began with a recurve.
There’s hope for us all!

While not exactly CA history, the pic-
ture on the left show that ladies even in
the late 18th century were enjoying ar-
chery. Although, as pointed out by Sandy,
they might need to work on their release.

Kyudo: Japanese Archery

Kyudo is beautiful to watch—it’s more of an art-form rather than a
sport. Centenary Archer’s Kyudo practitioner, Toshi, was kind enough
to let me photograph him while he practiced when he came to CA on
October 20th.
While in Japan recently I found an ar-
chery store specialising in Kyudo. The
bows, Yumi (pictured bottom left), are
asymmetrical, extremely long and are
beautifully made from laminated wood
(for strength) with leather or fabric
