An A bstract of a Thesis Entitled
"THE APOLLOS OF THE WEST"
THE LIFE OF JOHN ALLEN GANO
The purpose of this thesis is the presentation of the life of John
Allen Gano, a man im portant in the history of both early Kentucky and
the Restoration Movement. Research toward that end resulted in
the recovery of many im portant documents concerning the period.
Basic m aterials are his own w ritings, whether in his "Biographical
Notebook, " his frequent letters to the M illennial H arbinger, or that
found reported to or copied in other brotherhood papers. In addition,
a wealth of secondary sources are utilized to complete the overall
picture of his life and tim es.
Information gathered from prim ary and secondary sources is
presented in a combination chronological-topical order. A presenta­
tion of John Allen Gano's early years of preparation is followed by an
examination of each of the great events in his life as they chronologically
occurred.
Preceding the two chapters on the life of John Allen Gano is an
introductory chapter on his fam ily background. This chapter traces
the five generations of the Gano family that led to the generation of
John Allen Gano, and it provides the historical setting at the time of
his birth.
Following the two chapters on the life of John Allen Gano is a
concluding chapter on his descendants. This chapter centers around
the life of his oldest son, G eneral Richard M. Gano, a man im portant
in the history of the Civil W ar and early Texas, as well as in the
Restoration Movement.
The findings of this thesis show that both John Allen Gano and
G eneral Richard M. Gano were men of leadership in the brotherhood
and w ere closely associated with the main problem s and discussions
of their contem poraries. The thesis dem onstrates that both men
played prom inent roles in the progress of the P„es to ration Movement
in their generations, and that their contributions to this movement
have not been fully appreciated by recent historians.
The preaching career of John Allen Gano spanned six decades,
and that of Richard Gano covered a period of forty-seven years.
Together this father and son team accounted for 107 years of preaching
in the Restoration M ovement, and this record is unparalleled in the
annals of Restoration History.
In addition to the contributions of John Allen Gano and Richard
Gano, this thesis also provides inform ation on several m em bers of
the Gano fam ily who w ere associated with the Restoration Movement.
Of these the m ost im portant are: Captain Daniel Gano, M ary Goforth
Gano, M ajor Daniel Gano, M ary Gano Burnet, W illiam B. Gano and
M aurice Gano.
Information is included on the baptism of General George W ashing­
ton by Chaplain John Gano near the end of the Revolutionary W ar.
Special attention is given to tracing the relationship of the famous
Am erican businessm an, Howard Hughes, to the Restoration Movement.
Altogether this thesis spans ten generations of the Gano family in
A m erica, and covers a period of m ore than 300 years.
