THE ALMOND
CONFERENCE
DECEMBER 9–11 • SACRAMENTO, CA
Dear Almond Community Members and Stakeholders,
Welcome! The Almond Board of California Directors and staff are very pleased that you are attending the
42nd Almond Conference. As our industry faces unprecedented challenges, we hope that you will avail
yourselves of all the learning opportunities during the conference, which are designed to help you continue
responsibly and successfully in the face of California’s severe drought. We’ve never experienced a more
successful crop year than 2013/14, so let’s keep our eye on the ball and Crunch On!
Similar to last year’s program, the conference begins on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. with two sets of concurrent
workshops that will be available to you, covering topics as diverse as Irrigation 101, a Pest Management
Update and Sampling Workshop, and Exporter Overview: Regulations Keep on Coming.
From 4:30–5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Chairman Bill Harp and I will open the conference with our viewpoints
covering the state of the industry. The opening session will also have a unique component with
a presentation by Dr. Daniel Sumner, Director of the UC Davis Agriculture Issues Center. Dr. Sumner will
share with industry stakeholders the findings from a months-long economic analysis of the California
Almond industry, funded by the ABC. You will not want to miss this presentation as it contains vital
information for properly positioning our industry in the general context of the Californian economy and U.S.
agriculture. Immediately following Dr. Sumner’s remarks, we will all celebrate another successful year with
the conference opening reception sponsored by Platinum Sponsor BASF.
S BFor those of you who have attended past conferences, you have recognized that this annual gathering

very important that we take this time to take stock of where we are as an industry and to collectively
contemplate our future. I hope that this year will be the most rewarding conference yet for all attendees.
Wednesday and Thursday’s agendas are chockablock full of content. You will readily notice that there is
a very heavy subject-matter concentration on the issues of water and bees. These two issues represent
the biggest challenges that we’re facing in growing a high-quality and plentiful crop. Therefore, we are
dedicating a great deal of conference time for discussion and debate. In addition, we will have the
traditional “speed dating” sessions, where several of our researchers will present their research findings in
rapid fire succession. Plenty of time has also been built into the agenda for three research poster sessions.
Longer-lasting disease control
Also on the agenda, we will cover all of the highlights in our established and emerging markets along
with digital and traditional media outreach techniques. Also, of special mention, is that we will have a
