While I write this, I am in the midst of a beautiful Michigan fall: the bright colors of the leaves,
mostly sunny days with unusually moderate temperatures. This is the time of year to pause
and think about many things. Just so in the ancient cultures there were the festivals and rituals
of harvest time and storing away to provide for the non-growing time of year.

ACL is already making plans for so many things. Keep watch for blast emails about special
events, the upcoming institute in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the events surrounding the ACL
Centennial, and on-going work from the development committees and their reports. NJCL and
ETC are working for things directly involving students. Plans are already in motion for next
summer’s NJCL Annual Convention. ACL is a happening thing. Personally, I am glad we are not
complacent, and sitting back to just let things happen. We are active and moving ahead with
the times.

We are far enough into the fall term that we can see the progress our students are making in
our classes. My Latin IV classes are reading myth, Greek tragedy, and Vergil. It is marvelous to
watch them realizing how relevant so much of this is to the modern world. The Latin III’s are
starting to sense the political process of ancient Rome was in so many ways similar to what they
see happening today. (Teaching Roman politics and elections can be fun and challenging in an
election year, can’t it?)

As I pause to make these reflections, I want to thank ACL members for being who they are. ACL
members are alive, inventive, involved, sharing, and fun. Keep up the good work, everybody

Greetings,

That major holiday season is upon us, ready or not. For almost all of you, this means some time away
from the usual chaos of school, with more time to spend in the wonderful chaos of at least some
segment of your family. I hope you feel great thanks for both your work and your family lives.

Meanwhile, ACL and its constituent organizations are moving right along with their own sorts of positive
energy. For example, the NJCL officers and Committee just completed the Fall Planning Meeting,
focusing on next July’s convention in Troy, Alabama. The NLE is finalizing the many steps in preparation
for the 2017 exams, to be taken next March. The ACL Finance Committee is working to use the
investment policy in the best possible way and to revise it as needed. The JCCAE is completing selection
of the winner of the annual SCS Precollegiate Teaching Award. The ETC Board has had their fall meeting
in continuing preparation for their activities and tests for younger Classicists. But then, these activities
happen every year, along with many more.

But there is much more going on around ACL, as the website is being renovated, under the leadership of
Sherwin Little, ACL Administrator. And the Organizational Development Project (ODP) continues, with a
wide breadth of membership involved in the task forces and committees of the five directions of the
project. You might be wondering if anything is being DONE, or if all the committees are just MEETING.

The re-activated Membership Committee (Jennifer Jordt, chair), which is focused later in this newsletter,
is looking at ways to beef up student and retiree memberships. ACL is among the less expensive
professional academic organizations; a membership would be a fine gift for a colleague. Did you know
that a member does not have to be a teacher of Classics in any way? Please encourage your friends and
colleagues to become members.

The Institute Task Force, essentially an outgrowth of the Program Committee (John Gruber-Miller,
chair), has developed a call for papers, and is addressing changes in the format of the annual Institute, in
terms of schedule, venue, session topics, and other facets of the event. At this time, they are eager to
finalize, in cooperation with the ad hoc Centennial Celebration Committee, the location for the 2019
Institute. In fact, the ODP is allowing us to look carefully at the many ways our working pieces need to
interact better.

While the Visibility Task Force (Keith Toda, chair) and Professional Resources Task Force (Justin Bailey,
chair) are still in the process of being populated, the Governance Task Force is working on everything
from providing better education and preparation for Council members to defining the job of the
Executive Director, as ACL moves into use of this new CEO. The latter task now has a draft job
description, and the Executive Committee will be voting on adoption of the final version of it at their
January meeting. But more about that next month.

NEWS from NJCL and SCL

The National Committee for NJCL has been hard at work planning for the upcoming NJCL
National Convention Look for the next issue of NONE NOTES to see what is in the works for
Convention 2017! Do you get NONES NOTES and TORCH? Join NJCL! You will get NJCL
updates, such as the monthly issue of NONES NOTES. Go to www.njcl.org to start your chapter
now. The website has loads of information, downloads of chapter materials, and opportunities
for both new chapters and continuing chapters.

Both ACL and NJCL membership registrations may be completed online, with payment via credit
card or school purchase order. Go to the ACL website and click “Join Now”. For NJCL, you can

Excellence Through Classics
News and Updates

Excellence Through Classics is a committee of the American Classical League dedicated to
promoting and supporting elementary, middle school, and introductory classics programs. We
do this through the National Mythology Exam, the Exploratory Latin Exam, Classics Club, which
is a “parva” NJCL, teaching packets, grants, and awards.
Dormice! Christmas Songs! Class traditions! Showcase your teaching and students’ items in
PRIMA's first issue of the new year. Our theme: Saturnalia. In addition to professional articles,
PRIMA is looking to publish your student's comics, stories, game ideas, etc. Last day to submit
is December 15, 2016. Please send items to [email protected]. The next edition of PRIMA
will be out soon, so check your inboxes!
The Exploratory Latin Exam, which can be administered to students in grades 3-6, is given
between October 1, 2016 and April 1, 2017. This year’s theme is Daily Life in Ancient Rome.
The National Mythology Exam, which can be administered to students in grades 3-9, is given
between February 20 and March 3, 2017. This year’s theme is Heracles. Packets for both
themes, as well as other topics can be purchased through our website. The fee structure for
ETC exams and packets will be changing slightly this year, and will include a discount on both
materials and tests for ACL members

Vergilian Society Travel Opportunities
The Vergilian Society is offering exciting study tours in 2017 including “Northern Italy and Croatia,”
“Latin Authors in Italy,” “Roman Britain,” and “Gladiators and Roman Spectacle”. These programs are
designed to benefit and appeal to teachers at all levels by providing the opportunity to experience a
variety of ancient sites to support their own understanding and teaching of the ancient world. See the

the area where you are.

Grants Available from NCLG
NCLG puts the funds donated by organizations to good use. These donations are the seed
money used to create the grants which are distributed by this standing committee of ACL.
These grants help continue or establish special programs which promote or initiate movements
by teachers and groups to keep the Classics alive in communities around the country.

Information about these grants and the process for applications for NCLG grants, awards, and
support are available. Check the NCLG tab on the ACL website. Details, forms, and deadlines are
posted there.

Teachers interested in help from NCLG, or wishing to inform them of programs which are either
