HAT a wonderful thing a square of paper is! With a few folds here
and there, it can become a boat, an Indian wigwam, a nesting
bird, Santa Claus, or nearly anything else you can name. Not only is it
fun, it is easy.
It is also educational. Through origami—paper folding—Japanese
children learn to use their hands and develop their creative abilities. In
the United States and in many other countries around the world, more
and more teachers and nurses are using origami with their students and
patients.

youngsters. Engineers, musicians, housewives, businessmen, and many
others find endless fun and relaxation in this Japanese art. Lewis Carroll
was an ardent paper folder, as were Leonardo da Vinci and Harry
Houdini.
For learning the ABCs of paper folding, there is no other book as
delightful and instructive as Claude Sarasas's The ABCs of Origami. First
published in Japan in 1951 in a limited and expensive edition, the book
soon became a collector's item. In 1964, a reprint of the original by
Charles E. Tuttle made this beautiful classic more widely available. This

Practical Information
Symbols
The folding symbols in this book follow a system used by paper folders
throughout the world. The symbols are self-explanatory and can easily be
followed without written instructions.
Fold over, i.e. fold in this direction.
Turn over, i.e. turn back to front.
Fold along this line.
Existing crease.
Fold towards you to create a valley. This is called a valley fold.
Fold away from you to the back. This creates a mountain fold.
Cut in the direction indicated.
