All material published in this publica(cid:415)on is sent freely by the writers or by those
who agree (by submi(cid:427)ng) to have proper permission to submit said material.
Modelers and clubs may submit anything avia(cid:415)on related as long as it is posi(cid:415)ve
in message. Dona(cid:415)ons are welcome.
How to submit an ar(cid:415)cle:
I prefer the wri(cid:425)en ar(cid:415)cle to be sent in a Word doc format, and pictures sent as
JPG files. I make all pictures 100DPI x about 4” x 6” so please try to send yours
that size or larger.
Submi(cid:427)ng by email is most common although you are welcome to send a CD
containing your ar(cid:415)cles and pictures.
You can send Word ar(cid:415)cles with the pictures imbedded, but I use Publisher to
make this publica(cid:415)on and I have to take every le(cid:425)er and picture out of those
file types and rebuild the en(cid:415)re ar(cid:415)cle in Publisher so PLEASE try to not do that.
PDF ar(cid:415)cles are fine if necessary but they have to be inserted a(cid:332)er I finish the
issue….so try not to, but it is a way to submit.

RC Flying Program
BY MACON AERO MODELERS OF FRANKLIN, NC.
It started out as a desire to promote the hobby of RC flying at our club.
I have been teaching RC flying to those that asked me since the 80’s .
I have watched clubs get groups of people and tried to put them on a buddy box
with just a few minutes of ground instruc(cid:415)ons. Some(cid:415)mes it worked but some‐
(cid:415)mes not.
I wanted to do it different. I wanted all those that wanted to learn to have the best
possible chance at a successful flight and get the desire to take up the hobby.
With the help of my club, The Macon Aero Modelers of Franklin NC
we devised a program that would achieve this goal.
We agreed that the first test of the program would be adults, so we could evaluate
how it worked. This is how it went.
Macon Aero Modelers con(cid:415)nued….
We placed an ad in our local paper telling about our program. It gave a phone
number to call and reserve a spot as we were only going to do 12 students to start
with.
We picked an age group of 21 and up for
this class as it is my belief that adults do not like
taking classes with children as they can be a dis‐
trac(cid:415)on and adults do not like being shown up by
a 10 year old. We also kept out personal who
were not directly involved with the event as well
to help the students concentrate.
We have only 35,000 people in the whole county
so we had 7 students show up. This turned out as
a good size for the instructors and the students. It
gave us more (cid:415)me with each person. Our pro‐
gram went like this.
The students first met with Greg Doster our
ground instructor. He first made them fill out the Intro Pilot Program paper work.
Then he went over the basics of how a plane flies and what each control surface
does. Then he showed
them a RC plane and
transmi(cid:425)er and demon‐
strated the transmi(cid:425)er
controls and what it did to
the plane when a control
surface moved. He also
talked about AMA and its
benefits as well about our
club.
A(cid:332)er the ground school
the students went in to
Greg’s trailer that had

student
Macon Aero Modelers con(cid:415)nued….
There each student had 15 or more minutes to test what they learned. The club
had experienced pilots watching and instruc(cid:415)ng them. They also evaluated them
and once the student was able to control the plane with some measure of skill
they were sent to the flight line.
They were first put on a

structor Gerry Double‐
day and tried flying
with only rudder and
elevator.

Then they were sent to the next
instructor Bill Duncan who had an
electric Ultra s(cid:415)ck. This was differ‐
ent as now they had ailerons as
well as rudder and elevator control.
Macon Aero Modelers con(cid:415)nued….
The last instructor was Paul Ramey
and myself with my 30cc gas 120 Ul‐
tra s(cid:415)ck.
We teamed up on this to try a
different approach to teaching. Paul
was the safety man. His job was to
keep the airplane safe. I stood be‐
hind the student and gave instruc‐
(cid:415)ons.
If a student had a problem with
le(cid:332) or right I placed my hand on
the students shoulder the way to
move the s(cid:415)ck. This worked really
well as I could concentrate on just
giving commands and not worry
about the plane. We asked the
students later and they found it
helpful as well.
For our first run of this
program it could not
been any be(cid:425)er both as a
school and the weather.
Several of the students
have all ready become
members and are flying
today.
Macon Aero Modelers con(cid:415)nued….
About 6 weeks later we did a school for kids 10 to 18 and it went just as well and
we had enough (cid:415)me le(cid:332) that we put the kid’s dads and grandfathers on the flight
line. We now have a new youth member flying as a member of our club.
One thing that made training the
adults and kids alike was they could
not stop smiling a(cid:332)er they finished fly‐
ing.
It has been agreed to do this again next
summer and do more adver(cid:415)sing of
the event.
Our event was small compared to the ability
of other clubs around the country. But to gain
new members and friends at any number is a
plus in my life.
It took the help of many members to put this
on. More than I have named. Without their
help this program would not have happened.
My thanks to all
