PREFACE
This book was written as a dissertation for a graduate degree at The Uni-
versity of Texas in 1963. Since then the transformational theory has ad-
vanced a great deal. I intended to revise this book accordingly but my present
tasks prevent me from doing so. Those who follow the new development of
the theory can do so without much difficulty.
I would like to express my indebtedness to Professors Archibald A. Hill,
Emmon Bach, Rudolph Troike, and Stanley Werbow of The University of
Texas, Professor William J. Gedney of The University of Michigan, and Pro-
