Preface
“Septuaginta Deutsch(cid:15)” an endeavour to translate and annotate the Septuagint,
stimulated the Septuagint research in Germany, Europe, and abroad. Research
projects were initiated and worked successfully. In particular, the “Deutsche
Forschungsgemeinschaft” (DFG) has been sponsoring studies on the textual
history of the Septuagint in Wuppertal (Germany) since 2007.
One of the research projects in Wuppertal focussed on the biblical quotations
in the New Testament and Early Christian literature of the first two centuries. A
research group analysed the interrelationship between the transmission of the
Septuagint and the New Testament scriptures and established an electronic
database of the quotations (see www.kiho-wb.de/ISBTF). The working process
was supported by workshops, conferences and reports (see M. Karrer/S. Kreuzer/
M. Sigismund [ed.], Von der Septuaginta zum Neuen Testament. Textgeschicht-
liche Erörterungen, ANTF 43, Berlin: de Gruyter 2010 and other publications). In
the course of research, it became increasingly apparent that the early Christian
quotations are relevant witnesses for the Jewish texts. At a conference in Wupper-
tal, October 28–29, 2011, the findings were discussed and further conclusions
were drawn. International contributors deepened the understanding of the
manuscript tradition and the reception of Septuagint texts in the New Testament
as well as in the second century Christian literature.
In this volume, the results of the Wuppertal project and the papers of the
mentioned conference are presented to the public. We would like to thank
Wolfgang Kraus, the editor of SBL.SCS, for his long-term interest in our project
and for accepting the volume in the SCS series. Thanks are also due to those
who contributed to the conference and this volume for their valuable articles and
insights, to the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) for supporting the
project, the Kirchliche Hochschule Wuppertal/Bethel for housing the project
with its workshop and conferences, the Institutes for textual research in Münster
and Göttingen for their friendly and helpful cooperation and the University of
