Cedric C.Brown,co-editor ofthis volume, isProfessorand Headof
the Department of English at the University of Reading. He has
written widely on Milton, including two books, and on poetry,
masque and country house entertainment in the seventeenth
century. He hasalso editedseveralvolumeson the politicsofearly
modern literature, and his current work includes a book on the
social transmission of poetry texts. He is General Editor of the
series EarlyModernLiteratureinHistory.
Richard Dutton is Professor of English and Associate Dean for
Research (Humanities) at LancasterUniversity. Recentpublications
include Mastering theRevels: theRegulation andCensorship ofEnglish
RenaissanceDrama (1991),an editionofJacobean Civic Pageants (1995)
and Ben Jonson:Criticism:Authority (1996). He also wrote William
Shakespeare:A Literary Lifein the Macmillan Literary Lives series, of
whichhe isGeneralEditor.
Paul Hammond is Professor of Seventeenth-Century English
Literature at the University of Leeds. He is the author of John
Oldham andtheRenewalofClassicalCulture (1983),andJohn Dryden:A
Literary Life (1991),and editor of the first two volumes of The Poems
of John Dryden (1995) in the Longman Annotated English Poets

Peter Lindenbaum is Professor of English Literature at Indiana
University. He has written on Sidney, Shakespeare and Milton in
Changing Landscapes: Anti-Pastoral Sentiment in the English
Renaissance (1986), and has more recently been focusing on the
waysin which texts presentthemselves in the seventeenthcentury.

ArthurF.Marotti, co-editor of this volume, is Professorof English
at Wayne State University. A former editorof the journal Criticism,
he is the author of John Donne:Coterie Poet (Madison and London,
1986),Manuscript, PrintandtheEnglish RenaissanceLyric(Ithaca, NY
and London, 1995)and numerous articles on early modern litera
ture. His current project is a book on Catholicism, Anti-Catholicism,
andEarlyModern English Texts.
Janel MuellerisWilliamRainey HarperProfessorofHumanities at
the University of Chicago and the editor of Modern Philology. Her
research interests have centred on English Reformation literature
and on earlier English women authors.She is presently editing the
writingsand correspondenceofKatherineParr,and, in conjunction
with Leah Marcus and Mary Beth Rose, preparingan edition of the
speeches, selectedletters, poemsand prayersofElizabeth1.
Pamela Neville-Sington is a historian and bibliographer. She has
written Paradise Dreamed: How Utopian Thinkers HaveChanged the
Modern World (1993), an introduction to incunabula, 'A Purchas
Bibliography', in ThePurchas Handbook (Cambridge, forthcoming),
and an essay on 'Press, Politics, and Religion', in TheHistoryofthe
Bookin Britain, 1475-1557 (forthcoming). She has also edited and is
writing a biography ofFanny Trollope. In the present context, she
is working with Anthony Payne on a bibliography of Hakluyt for
the HakluytSociety.
Lori Humphrey Newcomb is Assistant Professor at the University
of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has published articles on
Jacobean popular culture and servant readers, and written on
Shakespeare, Mary Wroth and Emanuel Forde. The essay in this
volume draws on her forthcoming book-length study, The Stuff
of Fiction: Publishing and Reading Elizabethan Popular Romance,
1585-1800.
Sasha Roberts is a Research Fellow at Roehampton Institute,
London, whereshe also teaches EnglishRenaissance literature. She
has published on Shakespeare, Renaissance literature and art, and
recently co-edited an anthology on Women Reading Shakespeare,
1660-1900(1997), withAnnThompson.Sheiscurrentlyworkingon
astudyof the representationofdomesticspaceinShakespeare.
