Abstract
Calciumaluminatecements(CAC)areoftenusedincombinationwithcalciumsulfateand
Portland cement for special applications where rapid setting, rapid drying and shrinkage
compensation are required. A growing fraction of the clinker, which has the highest CO
2
intensity,isbeingreplacedbysupplementarycementitiousmaterials(SCM).TheseSCMare
usuallyfromindustrialby-productssuchasslag,flyashesorcansimplyberawmaterialssuch
aslimestone.ThisprojectaimsatreplacingthePortlandcementandfractionoftheCACin
ternarybinderswithsuchSCM.Indeed,theunderstandingoftheirinteractions,bothphysical
andchemical,withcalciumaluminatecementsandcalciumsulfateisfundamentalforthe
developmentofinnovativeproducts.
ThisthesisfocusesfirstonthehydrationofsystemswithandwithoutSCM,slagorlimestone,
fromthefirsthoursuptotwoyearsofhydration.Second,thisstudyfocusesontheexpansion
ofthesesystemsandonthemechanismsunderlyingthedimensionalstability.Theinfluence
oftheratiobetweencalciumsulfateandcalciumaluminateonthehydrationofthecement,
onthereactionofSCM,andontheexpansionishighlighted. Thisstudyindicatedthatthe
calciumsulfatereactswithCACfromthefirsthoursofhydrationand,onlywhensulfateis
exhausted,doesslagorlimestonereactwithaluminatephases.Moreover,thisresearchbrings
newinsightsonthemainparametersinfluencingthedimensionalstabilityofthestudied
systemsandonthemechanismsgoverningexpansion.Poresolutionanalysesshowedthat
supersaturationwithrespecttoettringiteincreaseswiththecalciumsulfatecontent,which
results in an increase of the crystallization pressure. The supersaturation determines the
minimumporesizeinwhichcrystalscangrow.Therefore,withincreasingsupersaturationa
largerporevolumecanbeaccessedbyettringitecrystalsexertingpressure.Thiscouldexplain
thecriticalamountofcalciumsulfateleadingtohighexpansion. Boththeconfinementin
nanometersizeporesandthesupersaturationofettringitearenecessaryforexpansionto
occur.

de la plupart des émissions de CO liées à l’industrie cimentaire, est remplacée par des

laitier,lescendresvolantesoulafuméedesiliceoupeuventêtredesadditionsminéralestelles
quelarochecalcaire.Ceprojetsefocalisesurleremplacementducimentportlandetd’une
fractionduCACdanslessystèmesternairesparcesadditionsminérales.Lacompréhension
desinteractionsphysiquesetchimiquesentrelesadditionsminérales,lesulfatedecalciumet
lecimentalumineuxestfondamentalepourledéveloppementdeproduitsinnovants.
Cettethèseseconcentre,premièrement,surl’hydratationdecessystèmescimentairesavec
ousansadditionsminéraleset,deuxièmement,surl’étudedespropriétésexpansivesetles
mécanismesresponsablesdelastabilitédimensionnelle.Uneattentionparticulièreestappor-
téesurl’influenceentrelaquantitédesulfatedecalciumparrapportàcelledesaluminatesde
calciumsurl’hydratationduciment,surlaréactiondesadditionsminéralesetsurl’expansion.
CetteétudeamontréquelesulfatedecalciumréagitavecleCACdèslespremièresheures
et,unefoislesulfatedecalciumconsommé,lesadditionsminéralestellesquelelaitieroule
calcaireréagissentaveclesphasesaluminates.Cetteétudedonneunnouvelaperçudespara-
mètresinfluençantlastabilitédimensionnelleetsurlesmécanismesrégissantl’expansion.
Lesanalysesdelasolutiondeporeontmontréquelasursaturationdel’ettringiteaugmente
avecletauxdesulfatedecalcium,cequisetraduitparuneaugmentationdespressionsde
cristallisation.Lasursaturationdéterminelapluspetitetailledesporesoùlescristauxpeuvent
croître.Parconséquent,l’augmentationdelasursaturationpermetauxcristauxd’ettringite
decroîtreetgénérerdespressionsdansuneplusgrandefractionvolumiquedepores.Ceci
peutexpliquerlaquantitécritiquedesulfatedecalciumresponsabled’uneexpansionimpor-
tante.Leconfinementdescristauxdanslesporesnanométriquesainsiquelasursaturationde
l’ettringitesontsimultanémentnécessairespourl’expansiondecessystèmes.
