Si el estoicismo es una de las principales escuelas filosóficas griegas en la Antigüedad y la que mayor impronta dejó en la filosofía y la cultura occidentales, ello se debe, en gran medida, a Crisipo de Solos (c. 280- c. 205 a. C.). Nacido en Solos, Cilicia (Asia Menor), cuando tenía unos veinte años se trasladó a Atenas, donde estudió primero en la Academia platónica y terminó siendo, desde 232 a. C., director de la Estoa, la escuela filosófica fundada unos años antes por Zenón de Citio (a quien había sucedido como director Cleantes, maestro a su vez de Crisipo). Según Diógenes Laercio, Crisipo escribió unos 705 libros, esto es, unas 250 obras; en dos volúmenes presentamos los fragmentos que han llegado hasta nosotros de dichas obras, así como los testimonios antiguos sobre Crisipo. La importancia de este autor en la historia de la filosofía es más que notable: desarrolló la lógica formal y la dialéctica (Laercio declaró que si los dioses tuvieran Dialéctica, ésta sería la de Crisipo) y fundamentó la mayor parte de las cuestiones debatidas en el estoicismo antiguo. ¿Por qué leer hoy a Crisipo? Porque, en palabras de María Zambrano, 'el estoicismo es el jugo que queda de la filosofía griega cuando se la exprime'. En este primer volumen se incluyen los testimonios y los fragmentos 1-318 (esto es, los fragmentos atribuidos a obras concretas).
