and Philosophy;
Sir Thomas Elder420,000 to endow chairs in Mathematics and
Natural Science, g3l,000 to endow the medical scbool, 921,500
to endow the school of Music, and 826,000 as an endowment
for general purposes;
The Hon. J. H. Angas-ß4,000 to found a scholarship in Engineer-
ing and 96,000 to endow the chair of Chemistry;
R, Barr Smith and family-920,000 as an endowment for the pur-
chase of books for the University Library;
Mr. Peter Waite a¡rd his daughters Elizabeth Macmeikan and Lily
Waite-an estate and gifts valued at about 9129,000 to advance
the cause of education in Agriculture, Forestry and allied sub-
jects;
The family of the late John Darling-915,000 for a building for the
Medical School, and 910,000 for a laboratory for soils research
at the Waite Institute;
lr4rs. G. A. Jury-912,000 to endow a chair in English Language
and Literatue;
Mrs. Jane Marks-830,000 endowment for the Medical school;
Mrs. A. M. Simpson and Miss A. F. Keith Sheridan-920,900
(estimate) foi the advancement of Medical research (subse-
quently increased by capitalisation of g 10,000 accumulated
income).
The Hon. Sir Langdon Bonython-920,000 to endow the Chair of
Law, and 952,000 for a Great Hall;
Sir Josiah Symon-99,500 for the Lady Symon Building for the
'Women's
Union;
Sir Toseph Verco-95,000 for the publication of research in the
Ñ4edi^cal sciences, ánd 94,300 ior the Medical and Dental
Schools;
Sir John Melrose-910,000 for a chemical laboratory at the Waite
Institute;
T. E. Barr Smith-334,000 for a building for the Library, and
910,000 for the purchase of books;
R. L. Johnson-f12,000 (estimate) for chemical laboratories;
Miss M. T. Murray-958,800 (estimate) for general purposes;
Sir George Murray-3l0,000 for a Men's Union Building, and
ß,79,700 (estimate) for general purposes;
Edward Neale-929,000 (estimate) for Medical Research;

Mrs, R. F. Mortlock and Mr. J. T. Mortlock-925,000 for research
into soil erosion and the regeneration of pastures; a bequest of
f5,000 from Mrs. R. F. Mortlock for cancer research; and
920,000 from Mr. J. T. Mortlock for scientiffc research in the
Medical School.
Sil Wiltiam Mitchell-320,000 to endow the Chair of Biochemistry,
and €5,000 for the purchase of books for the Library;
F. Lucas Benham-951,400 (estimate) to encourage the study of
natural history;
Hugh Hughes-935,100 (estimate) for pastoral research;

with a bequést (in 1955) of another 950,000 and the residue
of her estate for the same purpose.
T. E. Barr Smith, Jnr.-nearly 914,000 to establish a scholarship
tenable at Cambridge.
The University is governed by a Council, which until 1911 con-

Victoria, by the Grace of God, of the United Kingdom of Great
Britain and Ireland Queen, Defender of the Faith, Empress
of India: To all to whom these Presents shall come, greeting.
WHEREAS, under and by virtue of the provisions of three Acts
of the Legislature of South Australia, respectively known as 'lfhe
Adelaide Úniversity A.ct," "The Adelaide University Act ,{mendment
Medicine, Bachelor of Laws, Doctor of Laws, Bachelor of Science,
Doctor of Science, Bachelor of Music and Doctor of Music.
And whereas the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, and Council of the
said University, by their humble petition under the common seal of
the University, have prayed Us to the efiect following (that is to say):

to be conferred by the University of

Now know ye that We, having taken the said petition into Our
Royal consideration, do, by viltue of Our prerogative and of Our
special grace, certain knowledge, and mere motion, by these presents,
for Us Our heirs and successors, will and ordain as follows:
L The degrees of Bachelor of Arts, Master of Arts, Bachelor of
Medicine, Doctor of Medicine, Bachelor of Laws, Doctor of Laws,
Bachelor of Science, Doctor of Science, Bachelor of Music, and Doctor
of Musig heretofore granted or conferred and hereafter to be granted
or conferred by the said University of Adelaide oD any person,
male or female, shall be recognised as academic distinctions and
rewards of meri! and be entitled to ran\ precedence, and considera-
tion in Ou¡ United Kingdom and in Our Colonies and Possessions
tlroughout the world, as fully as if the said Degrees had been granted
by any University of Our said United Kingdom.
IL No variation of the constitution of the said University which
may at any time, or from time to time be made by any Act of the
Legislature of South Australia shall in any manner annul, abrogate,
eircumscribe, or diminish the privileges conferred on the said Univer-
siÇ by these Our Letters Patent nor the rank, rights, privileges, and
considerations conferred by such Degrees, so long as the standard
of knowledge now established, or a liké standard, be preserved as a
necessary condition for obtaining the aforesaid Degrees.

An .Act to consolidate certain Acts relating to the University of
Adelaide
(Assented to 5th December, 1935,)
BE IT ENACTED by the Governor of the State of South Australia,
with the advice and consent of the Parliament thereof, as follows:-
Short Title
1. This Act ma'yA bctes cited as the "University of Adelaide ,A,ct, 1935."

2. (1) This Act is a consolidation of the Acts mentioned in the first
schedule, and the said Acts are hereby repealed.

Interpretation
3. In this .Act, unless some other meaning is clearly intended-
'Council" means the Council of the University of Adelaide;
"Senate" means the Senate of the University of Adelaide;
"Universiff'meaus the University of Ädelaide.
Incorporation and Continuance of University
4. (1) The University established at Adelaide pusuant to The
Adelaide University Act is hereby continued.
(2) The University shall consist of a Council and a Senate.
(3) The University shall be a body politic and corporate by the
name of "The University of Adelaidd' and by that name-
(a) shall have perpetual succession;
(b) shall adopt and have a common seal;
(c) shall sue and be sued in all cou¡ts in South Australia;
(d) shall be capable in law to take, purchase, and hold all per-
sonal property whatsoever;
(e) shall be capable in law to receive, take, purchase, and hold
for ever not only such lands, buildings, hereditaments and
.possessions as may from time to time be exclusively used or
occupied for the immediate requirements of the University,
but also any other lands, buildings, hereditaments, and
possessions whatsoever, situated in South Austlalia or else-
where;
(f) shall, subject to sub-section (4), be capable in law to grant,
demise, alien, or otherwise dispose of, all or any of the real
or personal property belonging to the University;
(g) shall be capable in law to do all other matters and things
incidental or appertaining to a body politic and corporate.
( ) The University shall not alien, mortgage, charge, or demise any
lands, tenements, or hereditaments of the University unless with the
approval of the Governor except by way of lease for any term not
exceeding twenty-one years from the time when the lease is made in
and by which there is reserved during the whole of the term, the
highest rent that can be reasonably obtained for the same, without

The Council
5. (t) Subject to section 12, the Council shall consist of twenty-ffve
members.
(2) Twenty of the members of the Council shall be elected by the
Senate in manner provided by section 6.
(3) Five of the members of the Council shall be elected by the
Pariiáment of South Australia in the manner provided by sectións 7,
8,9, and.10.
(4) Not more than four ministers of religion shall be members of
the Council at the same time.
