E
ighteen percent of people worldwide experience
acid reflux symptoms. While medical science has
made significant advances in the treatment of gas-
troesophageal reflux disease (GERD), it remains a chronic
and relapsing condition.
The fact is that GERD is often undiagnosed and
unrecognized. Surprisingly, compared to the multitude
afflicted, a small number actually seek medical advice.
Self-medication is common, but temporary relief
of symptoms can often be misleading. Complications
of GERD can be masked by a symptomatic response to
even the mildest over-the-counter medicines. It is known
that those patients with long-standing reflux may actu-
ally have fewer symptoms with time, yet the disease
process may progress unbeknownst to the patient. The
importance of making a specific diagnosis of GERD can-
not be overemphasized.

More recently, various organizations have launched
educational campaigns making GERD better known.
Recently publicized GERD cancer risks have peaked
the curiosity of those having even the mildest forms of
the problem.
As a practitioner, I have often felt short-handed
with regard to providing my patients with detailed di-
etary and lifestyle advice. I have been impressed with
a patient’s desire to understand the process behind their
affliction. The fact is that most physicians are consumed
with the medical aspect of GERD and are not well
equipped to offer patients new approaches to helpful
dietary and lifestyle changes. It is those very things
that are the cornerstone to the successful management
of any medical problem, including acid reflux.
Tell Me What to Eat If I Have Acid Reflux offers a
comprehensive review of the mechanisms behind re-
flux disease and explores its many manifestations. This
work covers the medical and procedural aspects of
GERD therapy and critically details them. Newer non-
surgical procedures for GERD are mentioned as well.
Most importantly, Elaine Magee’s presentation of
acid reflux disorders provides the reader with an easy
understanding of GERD and provides a patient-
oriented, realistic strategy to controlling the condition
through better diet and living. Aside from sound ad-
vice about lifestyle, the variety of recipes is abounding
and this book offers the reader a sense that they can be
in control.
