The Vitruvian Man is a world-renowned drawing created by Leonardo da Vinci
circa 1487. It is accompanied by notes based on the work of the famed architect
Vitruvius (from which the name). It depicts a male figure simultaneously inscribed
inacircleandsquareanditisbasedonthecorrelationsofidealhumanproportions
with geometry described by the ancient Roman architect.

Abstract
The increasingly rapid convergence between machine and human languages has
created a growing interest in the semantic analysis of multimedia contents. More
recently, the creation of natural user interfaces has significantly reduced the gap
between man and machine. Despite the recent advances in the technology, much
remains to study in order to fill this semantic gap. That is to say the lack of coin-
cidence between the information the machine extracts from the data and the way
humans interpret that content.
Biometricresearchhasadvancedintheseregardsconsideringtherecentfocus
on “Soft Biometrics”. Those traits have attracted the attention of the research com-
munity in that they have some characteristics peculiar to “Hard Biometrics” while
they improve the semantic content they carry.
In this dissertation we explore the Body Soft Biometrics concept both from a
theoretical and a practical point of view. Being this field of study closely related
with medicine, throughout the manuscript we refer to many studies conducted in
the medical domain.
Taking advantage of datasets used for demographics, we analyze the relation be-
tween body parts and personal traits like anthropometric measures, weight, and
gender. The ability to extract this information is tested by using both the 2D image
analysis and by processing 3D video streams.
Subsequently, we use Soft Biometrics for pruning a biometric database, enabling
faster and more accurate response of a face recognition system. Moreover, we
build an application that demonstrates the feasibility of people re-identification for
limited groups of users.

Furthermore, we present two medical applications for health conditions tracking.
Theformerenablestheinteractionbetweentheuserandanautomaticsystemthat
performs a medical check up of user’s body, providing hints and lifestyle sugges-
tions. Thelatterisintendedtosupportthemonitoringofcosmonauts’weightlosses
due to the lack of gravity in outer space.
