In religion more than any other discipline, the volumes in the series
refl ect the “alternative histories” of women. The religious transformations of
the fi fteenth through eighteenth centuries have come to defi ne the Western
world. But women’s roles in religious life and the written record of their
participation in it were unknown, unstudied, or undiscovered until recently.
The Other Voice in Early Modern Europe publishes female-authored texts
either for the fi rst time or anew in critically edited English translations, al-
lowing women’s contributions to the early modern period to be understood

and applied in scholarly conversation and in the classroom.

From1350to1750,womenaswellasmenwereactivelyinvolvedinEu-
rope’sreligiousstrugglesandaspirations.Thisintroductionprovidesan
overviewofthereligioushistoryoftheera,placingthereligiousexperience
ofwomenspecificallyinthecontextofthatstandardnarrative.
Many people think of the European Middle Ages as deeply religious,
andthefollowingperiod—the“Renaissance”orthe“EarlyModern”—asin-
creasingly secular. On the contrary, the four centuries from 1350 to 1750
areaperiodofintensereligiousexperienceandinstitutionaltransformation.
Considerthereligioushistoryoftheperiodinfifty-yearsegments.1
Theperiod1350–1400:Asthisperiodopens,thepapacyisinits“Baby-
loniancaptivity”(1309–78).IthasbeenremovedfromRometoAvignonin
Provence(modernFrance),adisplacementsignalinghightensionbetween
thepapacyandsecularpoliticsthroughoutEurope.In1378,thepopereturns
to Rome. His return, however, is followed by the “Great Schism” (1378–
1415), when different sets of interest groups affiliate themselves with two
different popes. Meanwhile, in the Low Countries and north Germany, a
religiousmovementoflaymenknownasthedevotiomoderna(“newdevotion”)
flourishes.Itemphasizespersonalresponsibilityinthepursuitofthereligious
