Acknowledgements
The main focus of this book is on the use of B. F. Skinner's (1957) analysis of verbal behavior
as a guide for language assessment and intervention. The current version of the book repre
sents over 25 years ofresearch and revision of the program. The book would have not occurred
had it not been for Dr. Jack Michael, who not only taught us behavior analysis and Skinner's
analysis of verbal behavior, but he guided us through many years of attempting to develop the
application of Skinner's analysis. The first version of this book was written by Mark Sundberg
and made available in 1978. A revised version was then made available in 1979. These two
early versions of the verbal behavior assessment and intervention program greatly benefited
from the help of David Ray, Steve Braam, Mark Stafford, Thomas Rueber, and Cassandra
Braam. These individuals played significant roles in the development of the program present
ed in the current book. ln addition, much of this early work was conducted at the Kalamazoo
Valley Multihandicap Center and would not have happened without the conceptual and
administrat ive support of Dr. Jerry Shook. The third version was written and made available
by Mark Sundberg in 1987 and was partially funded by The College of New Caledonia, British
Columbia. The book was used as a course manual thanks to the efforts of Dr. John Douglas
and Dr. David Polson. The fourth version was written and made available by Mark Sundberg
in 1990, and the author thanks Dr. Ernest Vargas for his help with this version. The fifth and
sixth versions were written by Mark Sundberg and James Partington in 1996 and 1997, and
used as the text for a course at the College of Alameda taught by Mark Sundberg. These last
two versions, like the current version, attempted to make the material more "user friendly,"
and represent several new developments as a result of the daily testing and adjustments of the
procedures that occurred at STARS School, operated by Behavior Analysts, Inc. The efforts of
the STARS staff who contributed to this program over that past seven years are greatly appre
ciated. Most importantly, our work would be meaningless if it were not for the children we
serve, and their parents. We thank them for all they have taught us. Also, a special thanks
to Cindy Sundberg for her contributions to the program, and for editing the past five versions
of this book.
Finally, we would like to thank our families for enduring our seemingly endless work on this
project. We owe a great deal to our wives (Cindy Sundberg and Terry Partington) and our chil
dren (John and Danny Sundberg and Scott and Sonja Partington) for their patience, support,
