PREFACE
Tax Rolls from Karanis was originally announced as a publication
in two volumes, but the extent of the material has necessitated a change
of plan to include a third volume. Part I has made available the text of
three long rolls, and Part II supplements it with a series of twenty-four
fragments. The inclusion of the latter has led to a revision of the table of
the papyri, in which the chronological distribution of the rolls and the
fragments is indicated. The indexes and the classified lists of the tax-
payers, which are in effect alphabetical ledgers, aim at completeness, and
they are offered in the hope that they may be an adequate guide to the
content of the daybooks. Part III will be devoted to elucidation of the
rolls within the customary framework of introduction and commentary;
it will provide, in addition, the text of four fragments which came to our
attention through the kindness of M. Octave Guéraud, but too late for
inclusion in the present volume.
The edition of the fragments numbered 357 to 363 is the work of Dr.
Pearl. In this task he had the assistance of preliminary transcripts of
No. 358C and columns 2 and 3 of No. 359A, as well as of scattered notes
on most of the other fragments, prepared by Professor A. E. R. Boak
during the winter of 1924-25 in the Egyptian Museum at Cairo. Nos.
360-362 were recognized as accounts of arrears by Professor V. B. Schuman
before he left the University of Michigan in 1935, and the exact relation of
No. 357A to No. 224 was fixed by M. Guéraud’s success in reading the
column number of the former, which was only partly visible on the photo-
graph. The texts of the Michigan fragments have, of course, been tran-
scribed directly from the papyri, but of the Cairo pieces only photographs
have been available. For this reason we are all the more grateful to M.
Guéraud for his close inspection of No. 357A. Our text of that fragment
has profited greatly by a number of significant corrections from his hand.
I am myself responsible for a palaeographic revision of Nos. 357-363
carried out at Dr. Pearl’s request and with his coöperation. The method
of publication is that followed in Part I, with a single exception. For
reasons of economy horizontal check marks have not been printed. An
attempt will be made in Part III to compensate for this lack by a full
discussion of this and related subjects.
Many hands have contributed in the course of the years to the com-
pilation of the lists and indexes. Dr. Schuman and Dr. Pearl deserve

special mention for elaborating the working indexes ! of Nos. 224 and 225.
The material as now published represents my own rearrangement and
revision, executed for the most part during the spring and summer terms
of 1938, when a grant from the Rackham School of Graduate Studies of
the University of Michigan enabled me to spend a semester’s leave of
absence at Princeton University. To Professor A. C. Johnson of that
institution 1 am indebted for an abiding friendliness and a warm hospi-
tality, which put at my disposal the facilities of the Princeton University
Library. Almost daily discussion with him of my problems lightened
considerably the burden of tedious and involved labor. In the later stages
of the work, the Rackham School of Graduate Studies again came to my
assistance and made possible the creation of a small clerical staff for the
routine of copying and verification of references.
It is a pleasure to renew my expressions of gratitude to the Institute
of Archaeological Research of the University of Michigan for its generous
