Foreword
Museums serve as a means of spreading knowledge because the exhibits
provide 'sight, touch & feel' which is important in learning. Seminars and special
exhibitions are an important device to spread awareness, provoke new thought and
research.
The Numismatics section of the Government Museum, Chennai (Madras)
in Collaboration with Chennai Coin Society conducted a special exhibition and
seminar on 'Tamilnattu Nanayangal' at the Museum Theatre on 16.12.1999.
This publication entitled 'Tamilnattu Nanayangal' in Tamil (a few papers in
English) -Proceedings ofthe above mentioned seminar Compiled by Tmt. R.Shanthi,
Curator, Numismatics Section, Government Museum, Chennai and Edited by me,
when I was Commissioner of Museums was brought out as a publication of
Government Museum, Chennai in the year 2001.
Copies of the previous edition have been exhausted, which has proved that
the papers presented in the seminar provoked further discussion, research and new
lines of thought among the scholars and raised demand. Hence, the need was felt to
bring out this book as a reprint this year.

\ MESSAGE \
It is a dream come true for me and other fellow members of the
MADRAS COIN SOCIETY, when we came to know about the Seminar on
NUMISMATICS. Since, 1992 when we conducted our FIRST coins
exhibition with the active encouragement of the Govt. Museum, it was our
desire to conduct a Seminar also along with such exhibition. When this
was casually proposed to the Authorities, in one oft he meeting, they showed
keen interest and we all see the fruits of this labour.
My BEST WISHES to this longfelt Seminar on Numismatics here at
Chennai. We purposely call our Hobby COIN COLLECTING so that it is
simple enough to reach the youngsters. Our Coin Exhibition has opened
many peoples boxes and brought out to the sunlight their coin collection.
With THIS SEMINAR, I hope that MANY TALENTED COIN
COLLECTORS will come forward and share their knowledge with others,
who, otherwise are shy to come out.
