En mars, Tais-toi, je t'en prie (Will You Please Be Quiet, Please ?) paraît en librairie. C'est le premier recueil de nouvelles publié par Raymond Carver, ses vrais débuts. Le succès n'est pas encore au rendez-vous, mais le livre fait grosse impression, notamment sur le jury du National Book Award (il sera finaliste, mais devra s'incliner devant Wallace Stegner). Quelques mois plus tard, en 1977, Carver fait deux rencontres de première importance. Un jeune écrivain, Richard Ford, vient de publier son premier roman, Une mort secrète (A Piece of My Heart).
