I am particularly indebted to the late Walter Rudolf Hess, the Swiss Nobel
Laureate in Physiology, for influencing deeply my way of considering the
integrative aspects of the somatic and autonomic control exerted by the
central nervous system. It was on his suggestion that Istarted to study sleep
physiology during my stay at the Department of Physiology of the
University ofZurich, Switzerland. From then on sleep became a topic that
constantly interested me in my scientific career.
