Lesson
Day breaks.
Sorrow is a bird
that hatches in my chest,
leaves behind
splinters.
I meet you at the car
to trade items we’d lost
in our bedrooms, ensconced
in the intimate curve
of blanket, filmed
with closet dust, things
borrowed, snatched, gifted,
shared.
At the end
you say, I have given
you everything.
Yes, but this I have taken:
A drop of ink
in water bleeds slowly
eventually blackens
the cup.

The Way
This is the way to bury
the clock. To know wind
from rain is a practice.
Night’s storm
deepens the hours,
blooms us between.
We can try to touch lips –
If I stop you, we’re back
in time. This is the way to rewind
the springs, summon
the shudder-tick of new rain-
fall second passing.
The open flower parts
petals as it dies, each distance
increased, then dropped.

Myrrha
Where was my heart
when I sent father to hell
my heart inside of him already
only I meant to retrieve it
the way to salvation
is damning
little snatches of time
stolen kiss, fingers on his groin
confused in the sweat of night
breasts he overlooked in daytime
his chest on mine. Was who
lost from the start?
Had I planned to take his body
from him, my conception the first betrayal
my mother, my enemy
from the first time he loved her –
my desire umbilical and inherited
Why did I do it why am I
who I am
Impossible need was the death of me
thrumming through reaching limbs
it raised from a corpse

In sleep, I say
To be crazy
is a trap. I am thinking
of myself, dreams that fold
and unfold like mist
but never show their face.
What is a spider without the legs?
What is the wanting without the girl?
In sleep, I plead, Do not leave
in the night, wake to
another man’s face.
How many blizzards could form
from the stars? Just one,
but endless.

To lose time
for Mark Levine
Forget the tick, tick, tick of
three hands rotating on the face.
Read until you are nestled in
words, separate letters, all
bound about you – an
inky jacket, seeping inward
til none of it is separate.
Live for the winters with their
shattered days, shards that fall down
cold, wet on your slickening face,
nights longer than you’d think,
fat, full, belching stars.
Make too many plans and complete
them all, or owe it to yourself
to try. Do not make
lists, and if you must, write in pen.
Or maybe, lose a loved one first.
The memory that will always move you
to cry, that kiss, kiss, kiss of your grandfather’s
lips on your mouth, desperate for just one
more touch, how you knew then time is both
fast and slow, punctuated by heartbeats,
how the pulse lags as time speeds up,
the seconds, the days, the way
the final moment gone can pass
sluggishly, the dry lips parted, taking long
gulps of you, the way it happened so fast
you forgot to say —
