Sustaining Abundance
Theultimategoalofenvironmentalpolicyisreducingpollution.Attentionto
environmental problems in the social sciences has brought some bold gener-
alizationsaboutcausesofgoodresultsbutalmostnosystematiccross-national
studies that flesh out major theoretical arguments and test those claims with
data.Thisstudymakesaseminalcontributiontothateffortintwoways.First,
by taking environmental outcomes over the past thirty years as the central
dependentvariable,itprovidesabasisforevaluatingnationalperformancein
reducingenvironmentalproblems.Second,bydevelopingadatasetincluding
performanceinanumberofcountriesandelaboratingonmajorexplanationsof
environmentalperformancefoundintheliterature,thisstudyprovidesthemost
rigorousavailableanalysisofthedeterminantsofenvironmentalperformance.
Insodoing,itchallengeswhatisprobablytheconventionalwisdominthesocial
sciences.Thisbookwillhelptoplacethestudyofenvironmentalpoliticsonpar
withothercomparativestudiessuchasGostaEsping-Andersen’sThreeWorlds
of Welfare Capitalism, Arend Lijphart’s Democracies, and G. Bingham Powell’s
ContemporaryDemocracies.
Lyle Scruggs is Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of
Connecticut.Hisresearchandteachinginterestsareintheareasofcomparative
politicaleconomyandenvironmentalpolicy.Hisarticleshaveappearedinthe
BritishJournalofPoliticalScience,EcologicalEconomics,theJournalofPolitics,and
Political Research Quarterly. He is currently working on a project examining
changesinwelfarestateprogramssincethe1960samongtwenty-oneOECD
countries.
