Animportantfeatureofthetwenty-firstcenturyisthegrowingconcernthattoday’s
world has become “unsustainable” as questions are being raised about the state of
society to date. Against this backdrop, the sustainable development goals (SDGs)
wereadoptedbytheUnitedNationsin2015,anditisimportantforthenextgeneration
toacquirethequalitiesandabilitiesthatwillenablethemtoliveinaneraconfronted
with the diverse issues raised by the SDGs. What qualities and abilities will be
importantforthenextgenerationtoacquire?Andhowcanthesepeopleworktogether
tomaketheworldmore“sustainable”?
Thesequestionsareofgreatinteresttomanypeopleinvolvedinhighereducation
around the world today. One of the answers to these concerns is the promotion of
EducationforSustainableDevelopment(ESD),inwhichhumanresourcedevelop-
mentandknowledgecreation,especiallythroughhighereducation,areessentialto
solvingthevariouschallengesposedbytheSDGs.InordertorealisetheSDGs,itis
necessarytoraisepeople’sawarenessofglobalissues,tomakeethicaldecisionsand
takeactionsbasedonsocialjustice,andtodevelopscienceandtechnologythrough
researchanddevelopment.ESDiseducationtodevelophumanresourceswithsuch
qualitiesandabilities.
ThroughESD,peoplecanlearnhowtousetheirownexpertisetoavoidthecatas-
trophicsituationsuggestedbytheconceptof“planetaryboundaries”,tohelppeople
leadmore“prosperous”andstablelives,topreventfurtherdeteriorationofthenatural
environment,andtorestoresocietyandtheplanettoahealthierstate.Itisimportant
tounderstandthat“prosperous”inthiscontextdoesnotmeanthestatethathasbeen
achievedbysingle-mindedlypursuingeconomicgrowthinthepastbutthestatethat
enablespeopletoleadhealthyandhappylives(i.e.well-being).
This book edited by Dr. Tamara Savelyeva and Dr. Gao Fang examines these

Tamara Savelyeva is Associate Professor of Sustainable Education at the Hong
KongInstituteofEducationforSustainableDevelopment.SheservesasProgramme
Director at the UNESCO Hong Kong Association; Senior Founding Fellow of the
WorldInstituteofSustainableDevelopmentPlannersinHongKongSAR;andEdito-
rialBoardMemberoftheInternationalJournalofSustainabilityinHigherEducation.
Sheconductseducationalresearchandprojectsintheareasofsustainabilityeduca-
tion development in different countries. Together with participants of the Rio+20
higher education meeting in Brazil, she has contributed to the educational frame-
work for the 2012 Earth Summit. Her recent scholarly works include In times of
uncertainty:AdvancinguniversitysustainabilitymodelinHongKong(2022),New
knowledgeecologiesandpoliticsoftechnologicalchange(2021),andSDG3Health
andWellbeing:Re-calibratingtheSDGAgenda(2019).
Gao Fang is Associate Professor in the Department of International Education at
theEducationUniversityofHongKong.Hermainresearchinterestsareinminority
educationandsociologyofeducation.ShehaspublishedBecomingamodelminority:
SchoolingexperiencesofethnicKoreansinChina(2010),32papersininternational
refereedjournals,and14refereedbookchapters.Sheco-editedEducation,ethnicity
