Sustainable Infrastructure impacts our well-being and day-to-day lives. The
infrastructures we are building today will shape our lives tomorrow. The complex
and diverse nature of the impacts due to weather extremes on transportation and
civil infrastructures can be seen in our roadways, bridges, and buildings. Extreme
summer temperatures, droughts, flash floods, and rising numbers of freeze-thaw
cycles pose challenges for civil infrastructure and can endanger public safety. We
constantly hear how civil infrastructures need constant attention, preservation, and
upgrading. Such improvements and developments would obviously benefit from
ourdesired bookseries thatprovidesustainable engineering materials anddesigns.
The economic impact is huge and much research has been conducted worldwide.
The future holds many opportunities, not only for researchers in a given country,
but also for the worldwide field engineers who apply and implement these
technologies. We believe that no approach can succeed if it does not unite the
efforts of various engineering disciplines from all over the world under one
umbrellatoofferabeaconofmodernsolutionstotheglobalinfrastructure.Experts
from the various engineering disciplines around the globe will participate in this

Mansoura University, Egypt. He pursued his Ph.D.
degree at Arizona State University (ASU), USA, in
2006.Heworkedasapostdoctoralresearchassociateat
ASU from June 2006 until July 2007 and as a research
fellowatUniversityofIdahofromDecember2009until
January2012.Hehasmorethan20yearsofexperience
in pavement structural analysis, design, and characteri-
zation. He has participated in several state and national
projects during his employment in the USA. He was
one of the team members under Professor Witczak in
the NCHRP 1-37A and 1-40D projects which focused
on the development of the Mechanistic-Empirical
Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG). He serves as a
TRBCommitteememberonFlexiblePavementDesign
(AFD60) since April 2012. He is an elected board
member of the Middle East Society of Asphalt
Technologists (MESAT) and a member of the
International Geosynthetic Society (IGS),
Transportation and Traffic Society (TTS), International

Association of Computer Science and Information
Technology(IACSIT),andChiEpsilonHonorSociety.
His research interests focus on pavement material
characterization and modeling, mechanistic-empirical
pavement design methods, and traffic characteristics.
He was the chief editor of the ASCE GPS “Innovative
Technologies for Severe Weathers and Climate
Changes.”Throughresearchandgraduateadvising, he
published more than 70 technical publications and
reports.
Jan Valentin is active in civil engineering (focus on
pavementandroadengineering)formorethan15years.
Since 2004, he was employed by the Faculty of Civil
Engineering, Czech Technical University, in Prague.
Presently, he is the deputy head of the Department of
Road Structures and a senior researcher. He is also
working part time as a specialist for the international
company HOCHTIEF. He obtained his Ph.D. degree
from CTU in Prague in 2009, focusing in his Ph.D.
thesisoncoldrecyclingperformancecharacterizationin
2009.
Hismainareas of research andscientific interest are
recycling, warm mix asphalts, modification of bitumen
incl.rubber,performancetestingofbitumenandasphalt
mixtures focusing actually mainly on deformation
behavior.HeisfurtherinterestedinPPPschemesandin
introducing digitalization to the road construction
industry in the Czech Republic.
He represents Czech Republic in the HSE
Committee of European Asphalt Pavements
Association,andheisamemberofIASSandsomeTC
within RILEM.

Abstract. Thispaperpresentsanoptimizationalgorithmforfindingtherailway
track longitudinal profile from the inertial response of a train bogie. The track
profile is that which creates a numerical response from a numerical train-track
interaction model that best fits the measured response. An Irish Rail InterCity
train was instrumented to capture in-service vehicle responses to validate the
proposedalgorithm.SeveraltrainpassesintheDublin-BelfastserviceinIreland
overaperiodof4weeksareused.Verticalaccelerationandangularvelocityat
thetrainbogieweremeasured.Thereallongitudinalprofileofasectionofthis
line was surveyed by traditional means, for reference. The vehicle properties
wereavailablefromacalibrationstudy.Thetrackprofileisestimatedusingthe
proposed method which matches quite well with the surveyed profile. The
reproducibility of the methodis assessed.
1 Introduction
Real-timeautomatedmonitoringsystemsarebeneficialintermsoftheeffectivenessof
condition monitoring in identifying maintenance issues in any structural health mon-
itoring system (Malekjafarian et al. 2015). This is particularly important for railway
trackmonitoringconsideringthevalueoftheassetandtheimplicationsoftrackfailure
(Salvador et al. 2016). The current method of railway track monitoring in many
countries is using track recording vehicles (TRVs) to measure geometric properties of
railway track. It ensures the safety of tracks against a suitable standard (Kouroussis
et al. 2011). However, using TRVs includes high running costs and the number of
measurement operations undertaken annually is limited. Track faults might go unde-
tected between TRV operations which means that the measured data may lack the
frequency required to identify faults on time and may not enable statistical analysis to
identify trends in fault progression and track deterioration. There is a need for more
regular information on track condition which can be obtained by measuring the
