Preface
WearepleasedtopresenttheproceedingsofthethirdeditionoftheInternationalCon-
ference on Sustainable Energy for Smart Cities (SESC), sponsored by the European
AllianceforInnovation(EAI)inclosecooperationwiththeUniversityofMinho,Por-
tugal.Followingthepreviouseditions,thiseditionofSESCwasalsoorganizedwithin
theSmartCity360˚eventand,duetotheCOVID-19pandemicsituation,itwasafully-
fledged online conference, whilst still ensuring quality of experience. The main aim
oftheSESC2021conferencewastoofferamultidisciplinaryscientificonlinemeeting
coveringtheemergingandcomplextechnicalaspectsofsmartcities.Withinthescopeof
smartcities,topicsassociatedwithsustainableenergywerealsodiscussedattheSESC
2021 conference as it is essential to ensure a balance between economic growth and
environmentalsustainability,aswellastocontributetoreducingtheeffectsofclimate
change.
TheSESC2021technicalprogramincluded13fullpapers,whichweredistributed
intofoursessions.Adouble-blindedpeerreviewprocesswasrespectedforeachsubmit-
tedpaper,ensuringaminimumofthreereviewsperpaper.Regardingthecommittees,
cooperationwiththeEAIteamwasvitalforthesuccessoftheSESC2021conference.
Furthermore,wewouldliketopresentourappreciationtoallthemembersoftheTechni-
calProgramCommittee,whowerefundamentaltothehigh-qualitytechnicalprogram,
aswellastoensuringthequalityofthepeerreviewprocess.Lastbutnotleast,wewould
liketothankalltheexternalreviewersfromnumerouscountriesaroundtheworld,who
were specifically invited based on the areas of expertise included in the SESC 2021
conference.
TheSESC2021conferencewasadistinguishedscientificmeetingforallresearchers,
developersandpractitioners,offeringtheopportunitytodiscussallscientificandtechno-
logicaldirectionstargetingsmartcities.AlignedwiththesuccessoftheSESC2021con-
ference,whichisreflectedinthedistinctsubjectscoveredinthepaperspresentedinthis
volume,weanticipateasuccessfulandstimulatingfutureseriesofSESCconferences.
