Summary

Summary
Global temperatures have been rising steadily across land and ocean surfaces in the past century.
The 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21) held in Paris has resolved to maintain the
temperature increase at levels well below 2 °C, while making effort to maintain it even at 1.5 °C above pre-
industrial levels to avoid severe risks and impacts of climate change. The world’s dependence on fossil
fuels is projected to increase well into the 21st century. The subsequent increasing accumulation of CO
2
emissions in the atmosphere will only exacerbate the effects of climate change. The fast deployment of
carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies is crucial to maintain safe limits of global warming and
avoid irreversible consequences. Amine based post-combustion capture (PCC) is one of the most mature
technologies available, ready for immediate deployment and suitable for retrofitting existing power plants.
These are important advantages to avoid interrupting the power production process. Amine based
technologies suffer however from several disadvantages including higher energy penalties compared to
other CCS technologies as well as solvent management issues. There is still room for vast improvements
and further understanding and optimization of amine systems.
Given the environmental concerns driving process developments and considering the size and
scale of potential application of PCC, it is important to fully understand process hazards before its full
deployment. The overall goal of this work is to develop a framework of sustainability indicators suitable
for assessing and comparing different solvents and process schemes for amine-based PCC applications,
focusing on the holistic environmental benefit for normal process operation based on Life cycle
assessment (LCA), and substance/process environmental, health and safety (EHS) hazard identification
for evaluation of the harm potential in accidental scenarios. The framework should be available as a
decision making tool for assessing solvent/process alternatives throughout all design stages.

Summary
Chapter 2 presents an EHS hazard assessment framework for screening and comparing amine based PCC
options. A multi-criteria assessment compares the performance of 7m Monoethanolamine (MEA), 4m
Diethanolamine (DEA), 10m Diglycolamine (DGA), 8m Piperazine (PZ) and a blend of 7m
Methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) with 2m PZ under a set of different process conditions. The EHS
assessment is carried out on two levels. The first is less data intensive and provides a unified score that can
be used to compare and screen process alternatives, while the second level studies the contribution of
individual degradation products to different EHS hazard categories in detail. Results of the parametric
study show that lean loading is an influential factor in determining first level EHS scores, process costs
and environmental impacts. A tradeoff is observed between EHS and LCA scores for some of the solvents.
In the second level EHS assessment, the parent amine heavily influences most mass dependent hazard
categories such as the fire/explosion, acute toxicity and air mediated effects category. Heat stable salts
affect the solid waste category. Most degradation products are considered corrosive or irritant and
therefore feature strongly in that category in addition to the parent amine. The second level EHS
assessment is complemented with workplace exposure analysis to ensure the compliance with workplace
threshold limits. Nitrosamines stand out for acute and chronic toxicity effects and are therefore used as an
example to demonstrate the workplace exposure. Workplace amines and nitrosamine concentrations are
estimated to assess long and potential short term worker exposure as a result of gas leakages and spills
respectively. Indoor ventilation rates are inadequate to keep workplace amine and nitrosamine
concentrations below the recommended guidelines. To reduce short term exposure effects, a steady state
liquid nitrosamine concentration lower than 13.7 mM is required. The results of the parametric study
show that changing process conditions can lower nitrosamine concentrations, but can also shift the
contribution of the parent amine and degradation products to other hazard categories and affect LCA
metrics. The sensitivity of the EHS and LCA results to model assumptions and conditions are tested by
varying inlet NOx, expected aerosols and solvent degradation levels. Low NOx levels in the flue gas are
required for PZ and MDEA-PZ systems to meet the nitrosamine concentration thresholds for
environmental and health concerns. The chapter highlights the need to consider hazard effects during
early process design phases, identifies degradation related data gaps and critical process parameters
towards more environmentally benign PCC design.

Summary
Chapter 3 presents the integration of the sustainability assessment framework at a molecular level
for computer-aided molecular design (CAMD) applications for CO capture solvents. So far there have

been no other attempts to include sustainability indices at this level for CO capture solvent design. The

early integration of sustainability metrics at solvent design levels ensures the development of more benign
solvents with lower environmental impacts. There are inherent challenges to the introduction of the
framework at molecular design levels. Among which, are the size of the problem, which could involve the
assessment of thousands of molecules. The increased problem size requires the complete automation of
the data collection and data gap filling procedures. Chapter 3 describes the challenges and limitations of
the integration of sustainability assessment at a molecular level and the methodological developments
made to overcome them. The impact of the addition of sustainability assessment to more conventional
performance indicators is highlighted in the chapter as well as the further tradeoffs between EHS and LCA
indicators at the molecular design level.
Chapter 4 presents the development of a statistical model for predicting solvent thermal
degradation rates at stripper conditions using molecular descriptors in addition to other thermodynamic
properties. The successful integration of this model in CAMD applications can add an important
dimension to the sustainability assessment framework at molecular design levels. Experimental data
points from published literature are used to calibrate a model involving dimension reduction using
principal component analysis followed by non-linear regression (PCA-NLR) to predict thermal
degradation rates. Insights gained from the studying amine thermal degradation mechanisms are used to
develop a set of input molecular descriptors. The model also uses some solvent thermodynamic properties
and experimental conditions to predict thermal degradation rates. The model yields an R2 value of 0.88. A
Monte-Carlo simulation was used for cross validation of the model. Experimental data are randomly split
into training and testing sets and the average model performance is recorded. The procedure was repeated
1000 times and the model average R2 value is given at 0.8.
Chapter 5 presents the challenges and uncertainties in quantifying the impacts of solvent loss in an
amine-based PCC system. The calculation of the direct impact of solvent make-up requires the
determination of solvent production impact and the amount of solvent lost. Modeling the impact of
solvent production requires rigorous process models or the availability of life cycle data in databases.
Rigorous modeling is inadequate for screening large numbers of solvent candidates and severe data gaps

exist for required solvent families. In the absence of such tools, an available alternative is the use of
shortcut group contribution models. Uncertainties involved in the use of such models in PCC
applications are evaluated and compared to the uncertainties of quantification of solvent losses. Pilot
plant campaigns to quantify solvent losses are not feasible for solvent screening purposes and thus
dependence on scaling up experimental results is inevitable. Oxidative degradation is discussed in detail as
one of the main sources for solvent losses. Uncertainties in experimental procedures are divided into
conceptual and quantitative uncertainties. Conceptual uncertainties involve defining the effectiveness of
the procedure at mimicking real conditions. Uncertainties involving metal ions in the process, solvent
loading, experimental setups and degradation indicators are discussed. Quantitative experimental
uncertainties result mainly from measurement and calibration errors. Expected errors for different
analytical methods are compared for two common PCC solvents, MEA and DEA. Propagation of
experimental errors result in uncertainties in range of 20%, which is the same range as the uncertainties of
the short cut models for estimating the impact of solvent production for this family of solvents. This
chapter could be used to guide further oxidative degradation experimental work to avoid experimental
discrepancies. The lack of a consistent set of experimental oxidative degradation results large enough to
develop a statistical model is hindering the inclusion of this important parameter in a CAMD routine for
the design of solvent molecules.
Overall the work done in this thesis emphasizes the need to not focus PCC assessment on the
impacts of the energy penalty alone, but rather to widen the assessment to include quantitative measures
of other environmental effects and hazard aspects, especially for cases with identified tradeoffs between
costs, EHS and LCA.

Zusammenfassung
Global sind in den letzten Jahrzehnten die Erdoberflächen- und Meerestemperatur stetig
angestiegen. Auf der 2015 in Paris abgehaltenen UN-Klimakonferenz (COP21) wurde beschlossen, dass
die Erderwärmung 2°C im Vergleich zur vorindustriellen Temperatur nicht überschreiten soll. Eine
Stabilisierung der Erwärmung um 1.5°C wäre hingegen ideal, um die Risiken und Auswirkungen des
Klimawandels zu minimieren.
Zurzeit wird davon ausgegangen, dass auch im 21. Jahrhundert die Nachfrage nach fossilen
Brennstoffen weiter steigt. Die dadurch resultierenden CO -Emissionen werden den Klimawandel jedoch

noch verschärfen. Daher ist ein rascher Einsatz von Technologien zur Kohlenstoffabscheidung und -
speicherung von großer Bedeutung. Die Amin-basierte nachgeschaltete Rauchgaswäsche (Post-
Combustion-Capture, PCC) ist dabei die vielversprechendste und ausgereifteste Technologie zur Senkung
der CO -Emissionen. Existierende Kraftwerke können schon heute mit dieser Technologie nachgerüstet

werden, Optimierungsbedarf gibt es jedoch noch im Bereich des Energieverbrauches und bei dem
Umgang mit Lösungsmitteln. Angesichts der Wichtigkeit der PCC-Technologie für die Umwelt und ihrer
vielfältigen Einsatzmöglichkeit ist eine vollumfängliche Charakterisierung ihrer potentiellen Risiken und
Gefahren unerlässlich. Das Ziel dieser Arbeit ist daher Indikatoren einzuführen, welche verschiedene
Lösemittel wie auch Prozessabläufe beurteilen und vergleichen können. Die Umweltverträglichkeit der
Amin-basierten PCC-Technologie soll dabei im Normalbetrieb untersucht werden, zusätzlich sollen die
Auswirkungen von Unfällen auf allen Designstufen beschrieben werden.
Im Kapitel 2 wird ein System zur Gefährdungsbeurteilung von Umweltschutz, Gesundheitsschutz
und Arbeitsschutz (environmental, healthy and safety, EHS) eingeführt um Amin-basierte PPC
Technologien miteinander zu vergleichen. In einer Fallstudie wurde für 7m Monoethanolamin (MEA),
4m Diethanolamin (DEA), 10m Diglykolamin (DGA), 8m Piperazin (PZ) und die Mischung 7m
Methyldiethanolamin (MDEA)/2m PZ unter verschiedenen Prozessbedingungen eine

Gefährdungsbeurteilung sowie eine Betriebskosten- und Lebenszyklusanalyse (life cycle assessment, LCA)
durchgeführt und die Resultate miteinander verglichen. Die Gefährdungsbeurteilung wurde in zwei
Schritten durchgeführt. Der erste Schritt benötigt weniger Daten und dient als Voruntersuchung um
verschiedene Prozesse zu überprüfen und untereinander zu vergleichen. Die Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit
zeigen, dass dabei das Verhältnis zwischen CO - und Amin-Konzentration im Umlauf den größten

Einflussfaktor auf die EHS-Bewertung sowie die Betriebskosten und das LCA hat. Bei einigen Lösemitteln
kann ein Konflikt zwischen den EHS und LCA Werten beobachtet werden. Der zweite Schritt ist
datenintensiver und dient zur Bestimmung des Einflusses verschiedener Abbauprodukte auf diverse EHS-
Kategorien. Die Ergebnisse dieser Arbeit zeigen, dass die Ursprungsamine die meisten
gewichtspezifischen EHS-Kategorien wie Feuer/Explosion, akute Toxizität und Luft-vermittelte
Effektkategorien stark beeinflussen. Hitzebeständige Salze tangieren die Abfallkategorie für feste Abfälle.
Die meisten Abbauprodukte sind korrosiv oder reizend und wirken zusätzlich zu den Ursprungsaminen
in diesen Kategorien. Der zweite Schritt der EHS-Bewertung wird zusätzlich mit einer
Arbeitsplatzexpositionsanalyse verbunden um eine Überschreitung der maximalen
Arbeitsplatzkonzentrationen zu vermeiden. Nitrosamine stechen hier durch ihre akute und chronische
Toxizität besonders heraus und wurden deshalb für die Veranschaulichung der Arbeitsplatzexposition
genutzt. Im Zuge dieser Arbeit wurden Arbeitsplatzamin- und Nitrosaminkonzentrationen abgeschätzt
um die Langzeitexposition wie auch potentielle Kurzzeitexposition von Arbeitern bei Gasleckagen zu
beurteilen. Es stellte sich heraus, dass Amin-basierte PPC nicht in geschlossenen Anlagen gefahren
werden können, da die Lüftung unzureichend wäre und dadurch Arbeiter zu hohen Amin- und
Nitrosaminkonzentrationen ausgesetzt wären. Um Kurzzeitexpositionseffekte zu vermeiden, müsste die
Gleichgewichtskonzentration der Nitrosamine geringer als 13.7 mM sein. Eine Senkung der
Nitrosaminkonzentration im Prozess ist möglich, durch höhere Beiträge der Ursprungsamine und
Abbauproduckte in anderen EHS-Kategorien bliebe die Gesamtgefährdung jedoch ähnlich. Eine
Sensitivitätsanalyse der Gefährdungsbeurteilung im Bereich EHS und LCA wurde durch Variieren des
NOx-Zuflusses, der zu erwartenden Aerosole und den Leveln des Lösungsmittelabbau durchgeführt. Tiefe
NOx-Zuflüsse sind für PZ und MDEA-PZ Systeme wichtig, damit die Nitrosaminschwellenwerte für
Umwelt und Gesundheitsbelange nicht überstiegen werden. Die Resultate, welche in diesem Kapitel
präsentiert werden, unterstreichen die Wichtigkeit einer frühen Gefahrenerkennung in der

Prozessentwicklung. Zusätzlich werden Datenlücken im Bereich des Lösungsmittelabbaus hervorgehoben
und kritische Parameter für ein umweltfreundliches PCC-Design eingeführt.
Im Kapitel 3 wird die Nachhaltigkeitsbeurteilung auf molekularen Level in das Computer-
gestützte molekulare Design (Computer aided molecular design, CAMD) integriert. Bis jetzt wurden noch
keine Versuche unternommen, Nachhaltigkeitsindikatoren in dieses Level zu integrieren. Die
Verwendung von Nachhaltigkeitsgrößen schon beim Design der Lösemittel stellt jedoch die Entwicklung
von umweltverträglichen Lösemitteln sicher. Eines der grundlegendsten Probleme bei der Einführung
einer solchen Nachhaltigkeitsbeurteilung auf molekularen Level ist die Größe des Problems. Dieses kann
die Beurteilung von Tausenden Molekülen umfassen, so dass eine vollständige Automatisierung bei der
Datensammlung und dem Füllen der Datenlöcher nötig ist. Das dritte Kapitel dieser Arbeit wendet sich
diesen Problemen bei der Nachhaltigkeitsbeurteilung auf molekularen Level zu und beschreibt die dazu
entwickelten Methoden. Das Kapitel stellt die Auswirkungen der Nutzung von
Nachhaltigkeitsindikatoren zusätzlich zu den konventionellen Indikatoren heraus und beschreibt
Konflikte zwischen den EHS und LCA Indikatoren auf molekularem Level.
Das vierte Kapitel beschreibt ein statistisches Model für die Vorhersage von thermischen
Abbauraten von Lösemitteln bei der Nutzung in Strippern. Das Model nutzt dabei neben den
thermodynamischen Eigenschaften der Lösemittel auch die molekularen Deskriptoren. Eine erfolgreiche
Integration dieses Models in die Nachhaltigkeitsbeurteilung würde zu einer weiteren Verbesserung dieser
führen. Eine Hauptkomponentenanalyse (principal component analysis, PCA) wurde mit einem nicht
linearen Modell (PCA-NLR) durchgeführt. Das entwickelte PCA-NLR Modell basiert dabei auf
experimentellen Datenpunkten aus der Literatur. Es nutzt Erkenntnisse, welche bei der Erforschung des
thermischen Abbaus von Aminen gewonnen wurden um einen Satz von molekularen Deskriptoren zu
entwickeln. Das Model nutzt zusätzlich thermodynamische Eigenschaften der Lösemittel sowie
experimentelle Bedingungen um die thermischen Abbauraten zu bestimmen. Die Genauigkeit des
Modells liegt bei einem R2 von 0.88, zusätzlich wurde das Modell mit einer Monte-Carlo Simulation
kreuzvalidiert. Dabei wurden die experimentellen Daten zufällig in ein Training- und ein Testset geteilt
und die durchschnittliche Modellgenauigkeit aufgezeichnet. Bei 1000 Wiederholungen wurde ein
durchschnittlicher R2 Wert von 0.8 erzielt.
