This book was designed to be not only a platform for the teaching of Off Off-
Grid living philosophy, but to fill a huge gap in both the “Survival”, and “Off-
Grid” information base. Catering to the “back to the land” movement; the
“alternative energy” movement; the “homesteading movement”, and a half a
dozen other movements, authors, experts, and scholars have offered up a
plethora (or maybe it is a smorgasbord) of books and other materials; some
really good, some not so good, but virtually all with a single over-riding
philosophy -- that “independence” can be had by half-steps, by learning a few
techniques, by the pre-placement or stockpiling of industrially produced goods,
and by shifting our “dependence” from one industrial supplier to another – all
without fundamentally changing the foundations of how we think and live.
Independence is not a word without meaning. It cannot be an empty mantra, or a
shadow without reality. Shifting our dependencies, or temporarily delaying their
consequences, is not going to offer us a successful “survival”, or even living,
philosophy. There are a lot of really good “survival” and “off-grid” materials out
there (and I do buy them), but there are almost no materials that challenge (or
even explain) the fundamental presuppositional errors behind the cult of
dependency. The One-World Cult of modern industrial consumerism is not
dismantled, explained, or even challenged in most of the materials that are
marketed to folks who tend to show signs of having had quite enough of it. It is
our opinion that the lack of a cogent and consistent philosophy – one that
challenges the ascendency and reign of the consumerist status quo - has left the
enemy of true Independence in possession of the field of battle. It is our
intention to offer a philosophy that, whatever may be said of it, stands Contra-
Mundum (against the world), and against the prevailing foundational philosophy
of industrial consumerism, thoughtless consumption, and the dependence on
systems that are contrary to our own best interests. Maybe we have failed…
maybe we have succeeded. There can be no doubt that the pantry of survivalism
is full of stuff, techniques, tactics, materials, technologies, and alternative
providers. What our pantry lacks is the honesty and the wisdom to question
absolutely everything, because… who knows… maybe the Emperor, after all,
truly has no clothes.
