THE INTRODUCTORY SPEECH
In the name of Allah, the most Beneficent, the
most Merciful
All praise is due to Allah. We praise Him, seek His
assistance and guidance, and seek refuge in Allah
from the evil of our own souls and from our wicked
deeds.
Whoever Allah guides, no one can lead him astray,
and whoever Allah misleads, no one can guide him. I
testify that there is no God (who deserves to be
worshipped) except Allah alone, without a partner,
and I further testify that Muhammad is His
servant and Messenger.

"O you who believe! Fear Allah as He should
be feared, and do not die except in the state of

Islam (by being completely submitted to
Allah)."1

"O mankind! Be dutiful to your Lord, who
created you from a single person (Adam), and
from him, He created his wife (Hawwa), and
from the two of them, he created men and
women: and fear Allah through whom you
demand your mutual (rights), and (do not cut
the relations of) the wombs. Surely, Allah is
ever watchful over you."2

"O you who believe! Keep your duty to Allah,
and fear Him and speak the truth. He will

direct you to do righteous good deeds and will
forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys
Allah and His Messenger has indeed achieved
a great achievement."3
To proceed:
The most truthful speech is that of Allah's Book (the
Qur'an), and the best of guidance is that of
Muhammad . The worst of evil are the newly
invented matters [in Islam], and every innovated
matter (in Islam) is an innovation; and every
innovation is misguidance, and every misguidance is
in the hell fire.
THE DUTY OF RELIGION: TO SUBMIT THE
SERVANT TO ALLAH
To proceed:
Verily, the greatest duty carried out by religion, for
who adheres to its teachings, is that the religion itself
straightens out the individual's attitude upon the path
of Allah (Glory be to Him) and the Sunnah of His
Messenger and instructs the individual to
comply with the commands of Allah and His
Messenger instead of his/her evil desires and
traditions besides qualifying the individual to submit

one's heart and soul to Allah in order to dispose them
the way He wills.
This is the first task of the religion; or rather, it is its
foundational task, such that there is no task other
than it. Namely, release the human being from his
habitual whims, his soul's desires and embrace the
commands of Allah and His Messenger
Upon the fulfillment of this purpose, the individual
will inherently be a judge on himself/herself: is
he/she a sincere adherent to his Lord's religion, or is
this just an empty claim where the words boast of it
while there is no reality behind it? If the individual
submits his heart to Allah, the Lord of the universe,
and His commands and prohibitions then this is true
submission; otherwise, if he contends with Allah in
His commands, prohibitions, fate and divine decree,
what kind of Muslim is this?!

THE PROPHET'SCOMPANIONS ARE A
MODEL FOR SUBMISSION TO COMMANDS OF
ALLAH AND HIS MESSENGER
Consider the companions of our Messenger .
When they were taught, they learnt; and when they
comprehended [the religion], they felt the loftiness of
this religion and the greatness of the Sunnah of the
leader of the Messengers Consequently,
they completely submit their hearts and physical
bodies to Allah; they have never contended with their
Lord (Glory be to Him) in anything He decreed.
For instance, when Umar (may Allah be pleased with
him) Al-Faaruq 4 was taken to his house after being
stabbed, Othman (may Allah be pleased with him)
said:
"I was the last one who met Umar (may Allah
be pleased with him) before he passed away. I
entered [his house] and found his head placed
on his son's, Abdullah, lap. Afterwards, Umar
instructed his son: 'Place my cheek on the
floor/ but Abdullah refused and said: 'O
father, my thigh and the floor are equal.' They

remained arguing back and forth until Umar
said: 'You have no mother. Put my cheek on the
floor! Perhaps, Allah will bestow His mercy
upon me/"
In addition, a young man entered when Umar was on
his deathbed. This young man was counting Umar's
outstanding traits without harboring any ill purposes.
He intended to give Umar glad tidings as he is about
to meet his Lord; Umar, in return, was pleased with
what he heard. Afterwards Umar called the young
man upon leaving:
"Come! Raise your cloth [up your heels]! It is
better for your cloth and reaps Allah's
pleasure."
During this deteriorated physical condition, poison is
ravaging in his body and causing extraordinary pain.
However, he is still concerned with enjoining good
and forbidding evil wherein he is on the first step of
the hereafter, because his sole regulator is Allah's
religion. He submitted his heart to Allah and he did
not contend with Allah in His fate or His Divine
decree. Therefore, he customized his soul to fit every
situation; he devoted time for worship, and gave
worship its due right. Years passed till Umar ibn
Abdul Aziz, one of Umar's grandsons, experienced
his son's, Abdul Malik, death. Historians recorded
