Science is becoming more and more dominant in our civilization and incessantly
making the life of human beings more expedient. Along with the several vital
discoveries and innovations, the twenty-first century will be reminded as techno-
logical boom for the centuries. With extraordinary and distinctive properties, gra-
phenehasbeenconsideredasthemiraclematerialofthetwenty-firstcenturyanda
door-opening agent for the other 2D materials and many exceptional innovations.
The enthrallment of graphene is rapidly increasing, and the surface engineering of
graphene has become one of the fast-growing topic in materials chemistry. The
propertiesandapplicationofgrapheneareexpandingdaybydayandachievingnew
milestones. Since the discovery of graphene, various types of graphene materials
with improved properties have been synthesized, and therefore, graphene family
has become wider now. So, it is important to have the knowledge of current state
oftheartofgrapheneresearch.But,duetotherapidprogressingrapheneresearch,
itisimpossibletocoveralltheprospectsofgrapheneinasinglebook.Inthisbook,
wehavepresentedanoverviewofcurrentgrapheneresearchofacertainarena,and
manythingswillcovered inournewbooksofthisseries. Thisbookcomprisesten
chapters based on recent experimental and theoretical works. Chapter “Present
Status and Prospect of Graphene Research” describes the modern graphene tech-
nology. This chapter mainly focused on the properties and applications of modern
graphene materials.Chapter “Graphene-Based Advanced Materials: Properties and
Their Key Applications” deals with the properties and applications of graphene-
based blends and nanocomposites. Mainly, mechanical properties of graphene are
the main focus of this chapter. Chapter “Graphene and Its Derivatives for
Secondary Battery Application” accounts for a brief introduction to the graphene
material followed by a brief discussion on the recent advances in the field of its
derivatives. This chapter describes the application of graphene and graphene-
derived materials in the field of energy storage, specifically batteries in various
forms like lithium-ion, sodium-ion, lithium–air, and lithium–sulfur batteries.
Chapter “Recent Progress in Graphene Research for the Solar Cell Application” is
dedicated to the solar cell application of graphene. This chapter provides a com-
prehensive overview of the applications of graphene and its derivatives, namely

grapheneoxideandreducedgrapheneoxideinthefieldoforganic,perovskite,and
dye-sensitized solar cells. Chapter “Graphene and Its Modifications for
Supercapacitor Applications” is concerned detailing the variety of chemical mod-
ificationsroutesofgraphenereportedsofar,andtheireffectontheelectrochemical
properties of graphene and the applicability of the developed material as a super-
capacitor electrode material. Chapter “Functionalization of Graphene—A Critical
Overview of its Improved Physical, Chemical and Electrochemical Properties”
deals with the functionalization of graphene for the improvement of physical,
chemical, and electrochemical properties. Chapter “Synthesis and Properties of
Graphene and Graphene Oxide-Based Polymer Composites” reviews and explores
the progress of fabrication of graphene and graphene oxide-based polymer com-
posites. Chapter “Application of Reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO) for Stability of
Perovskite Solar Cells” deals with the application of reduced graphene oxide for
perovskite solar cell. Chapter “Graphene and Graphene Oxide as Nanofiller for
Polymer Blends” describes the electrical, mechanical, thermal, and barrier prop-
erties of graphene-based polymer blends, and lastly, chapter “Facile Room
Temperature Synthesis of Reduced Graphene Oxide as Efficient Metal-Free
Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Reduction Reaction” demonstrates the use of reduced
grapheneoxideasefficientmetal-freeelectrocatalystforoxygenreductionreaction.
Overall,thebookdealswiththedifferentaspectsofgraphene,whichwillprovidea
conciseoutlineofmoderngraphenescienceandtechnology.Wehope,afterreading
the first book of this series, the reader will get adequate information to move
forward independently in the ocean of current graphene research and to apply the
knowledge within. Moreover, each chapter of this book has abundant references
associated with the cutting-edge research around the globe, which enables further
reading and exploration.

Abstract Amongvariouscarbonallotropies,graphenehasbeenconsideredthemost
attractiveone,tilldate.Afteritsdiscovery,grapheneresearchhasbeengonethrough
different phases. With tremendous progress in graphene research, various types of
advancedgraphenematerialshavebeendevelopeddependingonthespecificapplica-
tion.Differentsyntheticapproacheshavebeenemployedtosynthesizehigh-quality
graphenematerials.Recently,graphenehasbeensuccessfullycombinedwithother
promising 2D materials to form multifunctional 2D hybrids. In this chapter, the
recent progress on graphene research has been emphasized. The current trends of
thesynthesis,properties,application,andcommercializationofgraphenematerials
havebeenbrieflydiscussed.

1 Introduction
Carbonmaterialsareoneofthemostsignificantabundantmaterialsofthiscentury.
Withtheirremarkableproperties,thesematerialsexhibitedhugepotentialityindiffer-
entareasofapplications.Amongdifferenttypesofcarbonallotropies,grapheneisthe
most promising one. This 2D sp2-hybridized carbon allotropy has grown momen-
tous attention due to its extraordinary properties including ultrahigh surface area,
enhancedthermalandelectricalconductivity,highionicmobility,superiormechani-
calstrength,etc.[1–5].Afteritsdiscoveryintheyearof2004,theso-calledgraphene
goldrushiscontinuingtilldate.Owingtoitsattractiveproperties,intensiveresearches
arebeingcarriedoutworldwideinrecenttimes.However,thecurrentresearchtrends
aremainlyfocusedonthemodificationofgraphenematerialstoimproveitsproperties
