Aliya ('the Ascent') A wave of immigration, of
which the first began in 1882, the second
took place in the first years of the twentieth
century, up to 1914, the third (that of the
author) from 1920 to 1923, the fourth from
1924 to 1926. A fifth, that of the refugees
from Germany, lasted from 1935 to 1939.
Emek, the The Valley of Jezreel, a great centre of
agricultural settlement in the twenties.
Haluts (pi. halutsim) Pioneer immigrant intend­
ing to work on the land or as manual
labourer in the towns.
Kibbutz A collective village.
Moshav A smallholders* settlement, composed of
individual farms.
Yishuv The Jewish community of Palestine before
the State.
