“THOSE IN POWER MUST
BE HELD TO ACCOUNT”
Truth to power – the ability to hold those in the very highest office to
account – is one of the many privileges of living in a democracy. It takes
persistence, strength, the ability to speak freely and, above all, time. But last
week justice was finally served – despite an avalanche of opportunities in
the months that preceded – and our Prime Minister was held to account.
This isn’t just a win for those who felt betrayed by Boris Johnson over
Partygate or the many lies that shrouded it, it is a win for democracy, for
navigating life with a strong moral compass and for living by the values
as a society we teach so young: “Do the right thing”.
In a world of wrongs, where each month of the past year has brought
with it a fresh challenge or scandal, our expectation to be led with
integrity and decency was under threat. Were we really living in a world
where there was nothing our government could do that would unsettle
the status quo? It certainly seemed so. But like those childhood tales –
Pinocchio, Chicken Licken and their other fibbing counterparts – there
is always a lie too far, as any five-year-old will gleefully tell you. Thank
goodness for all of us that our MPs finally remembered that integrity and
honesty are the foundations of our society; the very minimum that we
expect from those we select to represent us.
We are now sitting at another crossroads, which after the past few years
is something we’re all far too familiar with. Against a backdrop of war, the
