Foreword
This book represents the proceedings of the 4th International RILEM Conference,
which was held at the Technische Universität Dresden, Germany, from September
18 to 20, 2017, on Strain-Hardening Cement-Based Composites (SHCC4). The
conference focused on advanced fiber-reinforced concrete materials such as
strain-hardening cement-based composites (SHCC), textile-reinforced concrete
(TRC), and high-performance fiber-reinforced cement-based composites
(HPFRCC).Allthesenewmaterialsexhibitpseudo-ductilebehaviorresultingfrom
theformationofmultiple finecrackswhen subjectedtotensile loading.Theuseof
such types offiber-reinforced concrete could revolutionize the planning, develop-
ment, dimensioning, structural and architectural design, and construction of new
buildingsaswellasthestrengtheningandrepairofexistingbuildingsandstructures
in many areas of application. The SHCC4 Conference was the follow-up to three
previously successful international events in Stellenbosch, South Africa, in 2009,
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2011, and Dordrecht, the Netherlands, in 2014.
Thevolumeathandcontains91contributionstotheSHCC4Conferencecoming
from 30countries andfivecontinents andcoveringthelatest findings andresearch
related to SHCC, TRC, and HPFRCC. The articles deal with material design and
manufacturing, mechanical properties and test methods, structural design and per-
formance,durabilityanddurabilitydesign,modelingandnumericalsimulations,and
use in strengthening and repair as well as in other practical applications. The aim
oftheconferencewastoexchangeideasandexperienceinatrulyinternational,open
forum in the spirit of RILEM and in the tradition of former RILEM Technical
Committees dedicated to SHCC, namely TC 208-HFC ‘High performance fibre
reinforcedcementitiouscomposites’chairedbyProf.VictorC.LiandTC240-FDS
‘A framework for durability design of fibre-reinforced strain-hardening
cement-based composites (SHCC)’ chaired by Prof. Gideon van Zijl. In conjunc-
tion with the conference, the first meeting of the new RILEM TC on Textile
Reinforced Concrete, chaired by Prof. Barzin Mobasher, was organized. The con-
ferencesessionsdealingwithTRCwerededicatedtoProf.WolfgangBrameshuber,
whohadcontributedimmenselytotheinternationalexchangeinthefieldbychairing
RILEMTC201-TRC‘Textilereinforcedconcrete’andTC232-TDT‘Testmethods

and design oftextilereinforced concrete’aswell as byorganizing a series ofTRC
conferences inAachenbefore his unexpected passing in September 2016.
Along with RILEM, three further organizations acted as informational sponsors
of this conference: the International Federation of Structural Concrete (fib), the
International Association of Fracture Mechanics for Concrete and Concrete
Structures (IA-FraMCoS), and the German Structural Concrete Committee
(DAfStb). Their invaluable support is highly appreciated. In addition, on behalf
of the conference’s organizing committee, I would like to thank BASF and TU
Dresden for their generous financial support. Still further, it is worthy of note that
the participation in the conference was an integral part of the working program
of the Research Training Group GRK 2250 ‘Mineral-bonded composites for
enhancedstructuralimpactsafety,’establishedinMay2017attheTUDresdenand
sponsored by the German Research Foundation (DFG); it was a great experience
indeedforthegroupmembers.Wementionaswellourgratitudeforthesubstantial
support of the DFG. Furthermore, I extend my personal thanks to Prof. Volker
SlowikandProf.PetrKabele,whocontributedmightilyinco-editingthisbookand
co-chairing the SHCC4 Conference. Last but not least, I would like to extend my
