This thesis focuses on developing new methods to improve the efficiency and accuracy of Monte Carlo reactor physics calculations. Specifically, two original methods are presented: 1. A novel method is suggested to estimate errors in the cumulative fission source from Monte Carlo criticality calculations by using the fundamental-mode eigenvector of the fission matrix. Test calculations show this method provides error estimates distributed around the real errors. 2. A related method is proposed to optimize the neutron batch size in Monte Carlo criticality calculations. A simplified error model is derived that considers how batch size affects convergence rate and bias in the fission source.
