My biggest debt is to the students at Indiana University–Purdue University, Fort Wayne who served as assistants in my research, collecting the stories on which most of 
this book is based. Their names are listed below. Other Fort Wayne friends and colleagues also helped in a variety of ways. Larry Hayes and Paul Jean Provost first 
opened my eyes to the texture of the city. By listening patiently for more that six years, Marcia Calkowski, Virginia Petit, Alan and Pamela Sandstrom, Hermine van
