A Season of Change
We are well into 2018 and full of anticipation for the YAM’s spring
season, and we wish you a belated Happy New Year.
In December, we bid farewell to our cherished Executive Director, Dr.
Robyn G. Peterson who served Your Art Museum tirelessly for nearly
twelve years. She is missed, but her legacy continues as we forge
ahead with the excellence you expect and demand. We wish her
every success for her new opportunity in southern California. Robyn
will return to Billings mid-March for the opening of Emil Carlsen:
Quiet Harmonies, and Nature’s Cadence: Paintings by Clyde
Aspevig both of which she curated.
Our annual Holiday Appeal and matching grant brought in over
$67,500 by year-end in support of YAM’s annual operating costs.
To the YAM family of members, donors, staff, volunteers, and
friends—THANK YOU!
We look forward to seeing many of you at Art Auction 50! The
Golden Anniversary event will be held on March 3rd. The event will
be focused on recounting the years of success of this noted exhibition
and sale. Longtime friends will join our loyal artist community in a
grand celebration. Extra attention will be given to the Quick Draw
event, the Silent Auction, and the spectacular works of art, including
a print by Pablo Picasso, in the Live Auction. Proceeds from the
sale fund exhibitions and programs throughout the year and help
stimulate economic growth for all of the participating artists, many
who have made full donations. Please think about purchasing works
from these generous and gifted artists throughout the year.
We encourage you to take part in the YAM’s many activities for youth
and adults in the coming months. Classes of varying media are

Taleb stands uncertainty on its head, making it desirable, and
proposing that things be built in an antifragile manner. Extremely
ambitious and multidisciplinary, Antifragile provides a blueprint for how
to behave–and thrive–in a world we don’t understand and which is too
uncertain for us to even try to understand. The book covers innovation,
health, biology, medicine, life decisions, politics, foreign policy, urban
planning, war, personal finance, and economic systems. Throughout,

Museum admission is free during Artwalk, and it is combined with Jam at the YAM. Meet your
friends and start your ArtWalk at the YAM. Live music, current exhibitions, cash bar and light hors
d’oeuvres provided. First drink is free for new member sign-ups.

Nature’s Cadence: Paintings by Clyde Aspevig

Drawing upon both traditional and Modernist sources of inspiration—
as well as the greatest inspiration of all, nature—native Montanan
Clyde Aspevig has earned an enthusiastic following and an enduring
place in the annals of contemporary American landscape painting.
His beautiful oils, which capture every season in every guise, are
exceptional examples of contemporary landscape painting in the
representational mode. Viewers are often overwhelmed by the beauty
and emotional associations of his subject matter, becoming increasingly
amazed by the realization upon close viewing that Aspevig’s compelling
realities are indeed crafted from paint.

Emil Carlsen’s Quiet Harmonies
March 22–July 8, 2018
Montana Gallery
Emil Carlsen is counted among the large and diverse group of American
Post-Impressionist and realist painters who flourished in the late
nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Carlsen’s lush, painterly, and
deeply satisfying paintings took French Impressionism and later Tonalists’
work a step further in the direction of serenity and quiet sensory beauty.
His work reflects the American tendency to appreciate concrete form and
the meaning of the subject matter.

This exhibition is a sincere photographic and videographic documentation
of the inner workings, people and stock animals who are the central players
in ranch life that feeds a global appetite for beef and good riding stock.
The exhibition comprises photographs by some of the best documentarian
photographers of western ranching culture, who have captured intimate and
sometimes disturbing aspects of this ag-based business and lifestyle, along with
the cast of ropers, riders, branders, vets, breeders and ranch managers who
yield to contemporary practice when it’s efficient, but maintain the traditions of
the trade where it makes best sense.
