Preface

The specialty chemical industry is focused on the development of chemicals and materials from the
perspective of function and market value. The emphasis is not on the empirical structure of these
chemicals, but on how they serve end-user markets. The growth of specialty chemicals as a global
industry, is tied to exploring and expanding functions and applications for both new and existing
chemicals that can serve traditional and niche markets, as well as bringing these chemicals to new
geographic markets.
It is essential for those involved in the production and distribution of specialty chemicals to have ready
access to a reference that contains integrated information on these chemicals, their properties,
functional and application market sectors, manufacturers and distributors. Specialty Chemicals
Source Book, now in its Fourth Edition, serves this purpose. It has been extensively revised and
expanded and now contains approximately 18,000 monographs on this group of chemicals with 70,000
cross-referenced chemical synonyms, and more than 60,000 trade name equivalents.
For the last 25 years, Synapse Information Resources has established itself as a primary source for
information on trade name and generic chemical products. Data from technical specification sheets,
brochures, and MSDS from over 4,000 chemical manufacturers and their branches are collected,
processed, and updated on a continuous basis. This research has yielded comprehensive profiles on

Specialty Chemicals Source Book-Fourth Edition contains the following sections:
Specialty Chemical Monographs contains approximately 18,000 specialty chemicals. Each entry
contains information including the following: CAS (Chemical Abstract Service), EINECS/ELINCS
(European Inventory of Existing Commercial Chemical Substances/European List of Notified Chemical
Substances), FEMA, and UN/DOT reference numbers, classification, definition, chemical synonyms,
empirical and molecular formulas, properties, toxicology, precautions, storage, uses, use level,
regulatory details, manufacturers and distributors, trade name synonyms (including manufacturers in
brackets). All generic chemical synonyms and trade name synonyms are cross-referenced back to the
main monograph entry. The cross-references that are trade name chemicals are in italic type to
differentiate them from the generic chemical cross-references. Discontinued trade name products are
cited with a † symbol; unverified trade names are cited with a ‡ symbol; custom trade names are cited
with a Ø symbol; defunct manufacturers or manufacturer divisions are cited with a ♦ symbol.
All entries containing references that are described in greater detail in another section are linked with
hypertext, e.g., the trade name synonyms of Naphthenic oil: Calight RPO, Calsol 510, Calsol 804,
Calsol 806, and Calsol 810 made by [Calumet Lubricants http://www.calumetlubricants.com/]; are
linked to the "Calumet Lubricants" Manufacturers Directory entry as well as that company's web site.

and trade name product equivalents in alphabetical order. All entries are hyperlinked to the appropriate
monographs.
EINECS/ELINCS Cross-Reference contains EINECS/ELINCS number entries followed by a listing of
its generic chemical and trade name product equivalents in alphabetical order. All entries are
hyperlinked to the appropriate monographs.
Chemical Formula Index contains the formulas of the chemicals in this reference alphabetically
ordered by their constituent elements. Note that in some cases there will be more than one chemical for
each formula because many chemicals have the same formula with positional variations (e.g., o-, m-, p-
).
Manufacturers Directory contains detailed contact information for all manufacturers of the trade name
products and generic chemicals that are referenced in this Source Book. Wherever possible, telephone,
telefax, toll-free 800 numbers, e-mail and Internet addresses, and complete mailing addresses are
included for each manufacturer. Click on the internet address and access the manufacturers website or
click on the email address and send them a message ( if you are Internet enabled).
Glossary contains definitions of industrial chemical, toxicological, application and process terminology
that are used in this reference.
